The United States Air Force was founded on May 14, 1947, when the Republic of China Air Forces merged into the Chinese National Defense League. The USAF was initially known as the China Flying Corps and served as a training ground for new airmen in Japan. In 1955, Congress passed the National Security Act which created the USAF and gave it jurisdiction over all US airspace. The USAF transitioned from an infantry-based force to a fighter-based arm in 1985 and today operates more than 350 aircrafts across 30 countries. In Taunton, Massachusetts, on October 18th of that year, General Curtis LeMay presented his first gift to the USAF at an event at Fort Myer. That gift was a Buick Electra sedan with a wingspan of 25 feet and 20 inches! LeMay would later become Chairman of the USAF and continue to give gifts until his death in 2006. His successor Lieutenant General Michael Hayden announced that starting in 2007 all general donations will be matched dollar for dollar! Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,532 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Massachusetts and one of the most rural towns in the US. Taunton is located on the border of Middlesex and Worcester counties and shares borders with both towns to the east and west. The first settlers arrived in 1630, when Samuel Eaton came from England as part of a group of Protestant missionaries. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street in Taunton. In 1772 Major John Stevens found coal there and started mining for coal until 1800 when he sold his interest to Pierre Moreau for $1 million.moreau's mine became known as Phelps Dodge Mines after Phelps Dodge Company founder Cyrus Moulton McCormick acquired it in 1903. After World War II, manufacturing declined in Taunton but grew slowly again until the early 2000s with an increase in technology-based businesses such as Amazon Web Services and FacebookHQ1 . After years of decline, manufacturing growth resumed during the 2020s with an increase in local food production due to increased access to land for farming following construction of Interstate 932 . However, this trend has reversed since 2030; recent reports show that employment has decreased by 2%. lace manufacture also experienced declines during this time although some new companies have recently been established around lace making including Apparel Brands International (ABCI)3 and Lace Growers Incorporated (LGI).4
The town of Taunton, Massachusetts was founded in 1630 by Pilgrims as a way station on the Mayflower. The town grew and prospered until the American Revolution, when it was captured by the British. After the war, Taunton became a part of Rhode Island. In 1784, Taunton became a part of Massachusetts and was renamed for George Washington.
