Springsfield, Massachusetts is a town located in western Massachusetts, United States. The population was 30,635 at the 2010 census. Springfield is a part of the Springfield- Holyoke-Southbridge, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is nowSpringfield was made on land that now includes much of downtown and portions of the University District. The town was founded by Captain James Pritchard and his family in 1786 as "Portsmouth." It became Springfield when General John Adams signed the Declaration of Independence there on November 5,1792. In 1812, President James K. Polk sent Colonel Elijah Lovejoy to survey lands east of Springfield for the United States government and he recommended that Springfield be named for General Anthony Wayne who had fought with Polk in the War of 1812. On December 5, 1812, Ulysses S. Grant awarded Wayne's request for recognition and land around present day Springfield was added to the town name from Portsmouth Township. In 1827, a new courthouse replaced an earlier one burned down during a fire in Southbridge which also destroyed many buildings in Northampton County including two mills built by Nicholas Merrill nearpresent day Eliot Street and State Street. It should be noted that while Plymouth (now part of Worcester) may have been settled first in what is now central Massachusetts due to its proximity to several wars fought along the Connecticut River Valley it would not become a separate community until after Rhode Island gained statehood which happened on April 14th 1690 conformng to English law
