The area that is now Springfield was first settled by English colonists in 1629 and quickly became a center for trade and industry. By 1815, Springfield had become an important settlement within the United States. In 1828, Springfield was selected as the site of the new nation’s capital, which proved to be a prosperous agricultural community. The town remained an important center for commerce and culture until World War II when it fell into disrepair due to its proximity to New York City. The history of Springfield can be traced back to its earliest days as a small farming community. The region that now includes Springfield was first populated by Algonquian Native Americans who hunted game in what is now central Massachusetts. Early European settlers arrived in this area during the 1600s and soon began trading with local tribes. One group of earlysettlers named themselves “The Pilgrims” after they reached America on Thanksgiving Day in 1624. The Pilgrims were actually English colonists who had sailed overland from England on their way home from attending Mass at Trinity Church in London just before Christmas that year. Over time, many other groups migrated to this part of Massachusetts including Dutch traders, German farmers, Italian immigrants, French Huguenots (a religious group that emigrated from France), Irish Catholics (who fled Ireland during Queen Elizabeth I’s Penal Laws), and African slaves Sachsiramunde (Sacharandu) moved into what is now central Massachusetts from Africa around 1650-1660 AD.[1] This large influx of new people resulted in rapid growth within the tiny village located at present-day Springfields Mill Pond where about eighty households lived together according to one report between 1650-1660AD.[2] During this time period, small villages such as these were often ruled by chiefs or headmen who acted as intermediaries between their respective tribal groups and the larger settlements nearby. These leaders typically organized hunting expeditions/trips into surrounding areas seeking game resources while also controlling trade with neighboring tribes andNortheastern Europe.[3] As social mores changed throughout much of Great Britain during this era - including increasing concern over warfare and religion - many Native American villages began turning Protestant towards Calvinism in order to avoid being deported back east under British rule following religious persecution against Protestants throughout much of Europe at this time[4]. As a result of this cultural shift within these villages – along with economic opportunity brought about by increased trade opportunities – many native families started moving out Westward across Lake Winnipesaukee into what is now Central New Hampshire beginning around 17th century AD.[5][6][7][8] In 17th centuryAD there were several significant arrivals including John Winthrop – later known as President George Washington – who came ashore on Cape Cod Bayou nearpresent day Northborough on December 14th 1701[9]; Increase Mather – also known as Cotton Mather; Jonas Sargent; Israel Putnam; Reuben Randolph; Samuel Adams; Joseph Warren; Edward Everett — all instrumental members of Boston’s founding fathers[10][11][12], among others[13][14]. Local newspapers began appearing frequently starting around 1700 providing extensive local news coverage which continues up through present day[17]).
