Springfield is a city in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 26,547 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Hampden County and the largest town in Massachusetts. Springfield was first settled by English colonists in 1635, and became an incorporated city on May 30, 1854. The town's original name was "Hampden". The current name of Springfield comes from two sources: one coming from Thomas Hampden who represented Hampshire County in the General Court of Massachusetts from 1705 to 1709 and another origin story which has it that John Adams' father-in-law, Samuel Adams bought land here in 1635 as part of his purchase of land around Boston for what would become Quincy (now Quincy). When Adams moved to Boston later that year he took with him some Congregationalists and their families who had also relocated to what is now Springfield. The new community grew quickly and by 1638 there were 300 people living here. By 1639 they had erected a few houses but it wasn't until 1653 when they built their first permanent structure called the Old State House which still stands today on Main Street near present day UMass Lowell University. During its early years Springfield experienced many commercial opportunities thanks to its location just outside Boston proper on roads leading into both cities. This led to such businesses as Hingham Shearsmith & Co., Buttonholes by Jonathan Button, Fitch's Tavern, Gourd Neck Brewery (later Goodyear Tire & Rubber), Grocery Outlet Company and more becoming well known throughout New England. In addition to these prominent businesses, other early residents of Springfield included Reverend Nathaniel Parker (founder of Parkersburg Baptist Church) and Drury Lane School teacher Cotton Mather. Mather went on to write one of America's most famous books – "The Book Of Nature" – while living here during this period! One interesting event that occurred during this time is when symptoms were found among certain groups of people within Boston causing them feverishly before eventually being identified as smallpox; however upon further investigation it was determined that this fever wasn't caused by Smallpox but rather something else unknown at the time including measles! This event led to much ridicule within society for how things were handled back then with little understanding or knowledge about modern medical procedures etcetera etcetera…….. It’s interesting how attitudes have changed over time regarding such events! To this day many people know about this event due to Mr Elton John’s song about it called “Pox Americana”….. Although originally written about smallpox only…
