Springfield, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. Springfield is one of several towns in the Greater Boston metropolitan area. It has been called "The breadbasket of New England" and "The Athens of America." One of the first settlements in what is now Springfield was along the banks of the Charles River, on land that had been granted to Roger Sherman by King James II for his help in suppressing a rebellion near Cambridge. In 1692, Captain John Smith's group explored and charted much of what would become Massachusetts; he named one stretch of this river after himself, Charles River (the name still appears on many streets and bridges). When English settlers arrived in what later became Springfield they found an open valley with little natural barriers between it and other villages or farms. They founded two small villages – Wappingerville to the east and Groveland to the west – before settling permanently at Springfield in 1736. In 1786, when Mount Vernon was established as Martha Washington's presidential home by George Washington and his wife Martha (née Mason), part of their estate went into trust for public use as a school district including part of what is now Springfield. The town became such an important center for education that President James Keney purchased all but two buildings oneness Road from Jonas Salk early in its history; these were moved to Arlington National Cemetery where they still stand today as part of Driscoll House hillcare complex. First settled primarily as farmers-turned-threshers–a trade which only began becoming fashionable after transportation improvements brought people closer together during the Revolutionary War–Springfield quickly became known as America's most populous city because it had more than twice the population density then any other American town except Philadelphia. This growth led to new housing developments: South Street being developed into one large street running from Market Street eastward through downtown until reaching State Street; West Side being developed into parallel streets going northward from State Street up through North Adams until reaching Watertown; while North End continued developing along present day Union Avenue south until meeting Beechwood Avenue at Hanover Square just outside Central Park today. During World War I there were significant military installations here such as Ft Hood within walking distance from downtown which helped contribute to increased population growth throughout central Massachusetts due largely to soldiers returning home on leave or enlisting in nearby cities like Quincy or Worcester despite having no intention whatsoever ever returning home again!
