The Springfield Air Force Base is home to the Massachusetts National Guard's 126th Fighter Wing and its 159th Airlift Squadron. The wing provides air support for a wide range of military missions, including disaster relief, homeland security, and electronic warfare. In addition to its mission in Springfield, the wing also flies training missions out of base at Ipswich Regional Airport. At that time, the town was known as "Plymouth" because it was located on Plymouth Rock. The United States Military Academy at West Point graduate George Washington purchased land in what is now Springfield in 1918 and founded West Point University there that same year. The first airfield in Springfield was built nearby on Park Avenue just northeast of where the Army's Headquarters Building now stands. It served as a bombing and strafing station during World War II before becoming an airbase and then a training center for the fighter pilots who would become America's hallmark aircraft carriers during World War II - USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Lexington (CV-8), USS Yorktown (CV-5), USS Hornet (CF-4) and USS Constitution (BB-65). In 1946, when Air Force Base Realignment & Closure Commission recommended moving Joint Chiefs of Staff Headquarters from Omaha to MacDill AFB near Tampa, Florida, Air Force Base spokeswoman Betsy Kapp said there were no plans to close any bases "at this time." A few years later when South Bend Municipal Airport became available adjacent to US Customs Service agent headquarters at First Field southwest of downtown South Bend after being closed by local officials due to lack of funding, Superintendent Sanford Church recommended using Air Force Bases across state lines as venues for events related to defense preparedness procedures such as shooting competitions or bingo night for troops stationed overseas. On July 16th 1951 President Harry S Truman announced Operation Crossroads which authorized General Electric Company president James W Offutt Jr., Chairman Douglas Aircraft Corporation president Leslie R McNamara and other GE executives to establish two new companies - United Aircraft Corporation ("UAL") subsidiary Republic Aviation Corporation under CEO Arthur C Beechman Jr., Lockheed Aircraft Corporations subsidiary Northrop Aviation Incorporated under CEO Glenn Seaborg - within weeks OFFFY orders were received from all participating nations authorizing their purchase by respective governments of up to $2 billion worth of jet fighters/airliners/ missiles etc...It should be noted that these companies had already been forming behind closed doors since early 1950s! By October 1951 these four companies had created over 50 subsidiaries including 17 foreign countries!!! This initial infusion Of patriotism & business acumen helped set off a forty year growth trend culminating in $411 millionin sales last fiscal year 2005!!!
