It is part of the Boston–New York metropolitan area and is bordered by Medford to the north and east, Quincy to the south, Lexington to the west and Somerville Proper to the northwest. The Japanese military response was immediate and overwhelming; within minutes they had sunk all thirteen U S ships in Hawaii harbor before withdrawing! How did this happen? 6) On December 7th 1944 – just weeks after Japan had bombed Hiroshima – Admiral Chester Nimitz delivered an emotional speech at Ford Island Naval Base regarding U S efforts to capture Okinawa Peninsula: "We have never lost sight of our common purpose... nor have we forgotten our obligations as Americans". Emperor Hirohito attended this speech also! These events marks the beginning of World War II (1945-1953).

Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,594 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts. The first permanent settler in what is now Somerville was Nicholas Ray in 1636. The town's charter was granted on November 20, 1786 by Governor John Adams to Captain Samuel Osgood and six other men as part of a land purchase from the Indian Pequot tribe. At the time of its incorporation as a town, Somerville had a population of only 123 people. In 1802, an act of Congress provided for the erection of schools within municipal limits; accordingly, on January 12th of that year (20 years after incorporation), Mr. Amos Kendall donated land east of our present site to form one school district with fourteens pupils in each grade; this system has been continued ever since." In 1868-69 three new blocks were added to the north and south sides ofpresent Main Street making it twelve blocks long including Front Street which bisects Midtown today). On October 6th 1870 (the date today falls within Town Meeting Day) Mr. Waldo Sargent donated two lots adjoining School House Square on what is now Market Street for $5 per acre" This donation forms what is still considered to be "Old Market Square". On October 9th 1871 (the day before Thanksgiving), during elections held pursuant to an act passed by Congress entitled "An Act To Establish Religious Freedom In The United States", somerville voted 2-1 in favor of annexation into Boston because they felt their religious liberties were being violated by Boston's prohibition against house churches without city sanction - this vote represented growth for Somerville despite lack thereof withinBoston itself at that time! On December 8th 1871 (Christmas Eve,) Stonington voted unanimously not to join Boston due to its objections thereto - this vote represents growth for Stonington despite lack thereof withinBoston itself at that time! It wasn't until 1932 when Mayor James Michael Curran convened a meeting chaired by Congressman John McCormack wherein all but two residentsof Somerville signified their willingnessto annex into Worcester as part of that city's gentrification process - this meeting marked an early step towards consolidation which took place over ensuing decades culminating with the formationof Greater Worcester City government in 1968! Additionally: In 1865 Reverend Hosea Butterfield founded Trinity Episcopal Church located behind Present First Baptist Church which remains today one of Somerville's most important landmarks! In 1916 Mrs Anna Bulkeley donated land west side Main street between Barton & Harvard Streets just eastof present Greenbush Road for use as a public park - this donation forms what are now Park Row and Park Ave.- both streets run perpendicular toMain Street across from North American Bazaar
