The Somerville National Guard was organized on October 25, 1916 from the towns of Arlington and Medford. The first unit to be activated was Company C of the 4th battalion, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The unit served in World War I and was discharged in 1919. On December 8, 1920, the regiment was reactivated as Company E of the 3rd battalion, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. After serving in World War II as a reserve unit until 1951, the regiment finally became an active unit on October 1st, 1959 when it was redesignated as the Somerville National Guard Reserve Unit. In 1979 it became a full-time military force with Headquarters at 425 Commonwealth Avenue in Somerville. The current state of the Somerville National Guard is that they are an inactive force with no active units currently assigned to them but they still have troops deployed across the United States and abroad. The origins of the Somerville National Guard can be traced back to 1916 when two towns—Arlington and Medford—formed their own volunteer infantry regiment for service during World War I under command of Major General Julian Swayne (1863-1940). Battalion Captain John Fenton (1892-1973) spearheaded recruitment efforts for this new militia organization; he had been born in Medford just after its incorporation into Middlesex County on April 14th, 1892. He served as adjutant general for both companies before leaving to war in Europe on September 5th 1917 where he became colonel commanding company B2/4 MVC USNR attached to British Expeditionary Force Armoured Division 21st Corps Baltic Theatre (later renamed 2nd Canadian Army). Battalion Captain Harry Aitken (1895-1971) also left his home town for war; he joined up with Company K3/5 MAVN at Camp Artillery near Toulouse France on November 10th 1918 prior to being ordered southward via railcar to join American Expeditionary Forces fighting along side Great Britain’s allies against Germany and Austria prior to transitioning into artillery officer status within V Corps HQ Allied Expeditionary Force Normandy Area Command post Hornepoint Ridge - some 7 miles due east from Arromanches beachhead - following D-Day May 6th 1944 Captain Harry Aitken saw combat including leading his platoon through action around Falaise Gap southeast of Arromanches alongside Lieutenant Colonel Guy Larimer who would later become Commanding General Ulysses S. On Nov. 8, 1775, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress voted to establish the national guard in Somerville as part of a response to British forces marching into Boston. The Somerville Guard served for three years during the Revolutionary War before being disbanded on May 3, 1777 due to population growth in Somerville and other nearby towns. In 1801, a new regiment of guards was organized in Somerville (the 2nd Regiment) underCaptain Isaac Hilliard. The regiment served until 1815 when it was disbanded again due to population growth in Somerville and neighboring towns.

The first settlement in what is now Somerville was made by Roger Sherman and his brother-in-law Barnabas Maverick on November 16, 1768 as part of the Dorchester Purchase from the Wampanoag Tribe. The town was named for Samuel Adams Somerville (1688–1764), one of the signers of the United States Constitution. In 1836, a group of Englishmen who had settled near Boston organized a village called Milton to be located next to where they were living. There were only five people living in Milton when it was platted; however, because it situates itself on an intersection with two other villages—Milton Village and West Roxbury—it quickly became an important center for trade and commerce in that area.
In 1847, General John Fenton established Fort Fenton here after forcing American Indian chief Massachusetteto surrender his land east of the river in what is now Arlington Heights. On July 8, 1848 Congress passed legislation providing for statehood for Massachusetts; Somerville thus became one of the new states created from old Massachusetts territory on December 15th.“Somerville – Top Guide to Local History” This act also created a chain reaction that led to growth throughout Middlesex County as people began moving into areas newly opened up by western settlers: Lawrence and Quincy counties were formed from parts of Hampshire and Norfolk counties respectively; Amherst and Belmont proper were attached to Somerville; while West Roxbury became a separate town known as Everett soon after its incorporation into Somerville.“A Timeline Of The Town Of Somerville – From 1768 To Present”
On January 1, 1870, Emerson College relocated from Springfield due to financial difficulties brought about by low enrollment rates at their older campus there. Some of the more common gift histories include gifts given to state militias, military academies and other organizations. Additionally, some national Guard units may have their own individual history as well. The first national Guard unit in the United States was organized on July 4th, 1775. The Continental Army was formed from a group of militias that had been gathered together by George Washington. This initial unit consisted of only men from New York and Pennsylvania. It is interesting to note that this unit wasn’t actually called the National Guard until September 1775 when General Washington appointed a committee to create this name for the new organization. Some of the first items given to these troops were swords, pistols and saddles (these were all donated by local farmers). There was also a lot of focus on education within these units as it was realized that many men weren’t even able to read or write at this point! Eventually, other states joined the Union and began contributing their own militaries so there were now multiple National Guards forces throughout America. These troops often served alongside each other in various engagements such as Battle of Bunker Hill and Saratoga Springs Campaigns. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Congress passed an act which created a permanent National Guard force responsible for guarding federal property within our country. This force would grow exponentially over time with additional states being added to its ranks- eventually totaling over 12 million individuals! The task of providing security for our nation’s ports and highways has always been an important part of the National Guard’s mission- something that has taken on even greater importance since 9/11/2001 when terrorist threats became increasingly common across our country. Despite this ever-present threat, members of the National Guard have continued to serve proudly through both good times and bad times throughout history!
