Somerville, MA is a town in the central part of Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,623 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Massachusetts after Boston. The town lies on the border of Quincy and Worcester counties and is bordered by Springfield to the east, Wellesley to the north, Walthamstow to the west, and Easton to the south. The first settler in what is now Somerville was John Winthrop who arrived there in 1630. In 1765, it became part of Massachusetts Colony through an Act of Parliament which granted land around Boston to settlers from Great Britain as compensation for their losses during America's Revolutionary War. It was not until 1775 that Somerville became a separate township within Worcester County when New England Confederation was formed from all of New England following its victory over British forces at Saratoga Battle Field on October 14th. The original white settlers were Congregationalists from Southwark (now London) who built some homes on present-day Medford Street while others established themselves along present-day Boylston Street and Arlington Avenue. In 1849, when Worcester County was divided into two parts for administrative convenience – one including Somerville – this caused some tension between its residents and their county government which continued until 1872 when both towns were consolidated into one municipal government with a single post office located at Somerville center due to increasing population growth throughout much of eastern Massachusetts during that era. Kellett also built what is now Somerville High School which opened its doors in 1907.
