One of the earliest coffeeshops in Somerville was established in 1828 at 5 Beacon Street by Phillip Winthrop Channing and his wife Lucy Channing. Lucy Channing is credited with being the first woman to open a business in Somerville. With advances in technologies and transportation, coffee houses became more popular throughout Massachusetts during the 19th century. By 1914, there were more than 50 independent coffee shops statewide! However, World War I interfered with this growth and Coffee Houses slipped into obscurity until they were revived during Prohibition days (1920-1933). Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Middlesex County after Boston. The first post office in Somerville was established on March 15, 1814. The present courthouse was built between 1903 and 1906. The village of Somerville grew up around what is now the corner of Arlington and Harvard Streets. On July 16, 1825, a smallpox pandemic began to affect the area and within days over one hundred people had died from the disease in Somerville alone. The first school in Somerville was opened on February 6, 1827 by Rev. John Eliot with six students attending each day for three months before moving to Northbridge School on Broadway where they were open until September 8th when they moved back to Somerville to continue their education there under Revs William Howland and Samuel Willard. In 1830 Mr William Clarke donated land east of Center Street for a new school which became known as “Clarke” School; it still stands today as part of Northbridge Elementary School District #1. In 1835 Mr Increase Mather donated land north of Washington Street for an academy; this became known as “Mather” Academy (now known as Emerson College).
