In recent years, the Coast Guard has become increasingly involved in Search and Rescue operations as well as anti-drug patrols.
Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Somerville was John Winthrop in 1630. The town was incorporated on February 6, 1792. In 1835 it became the seat of Middlesex County and remained so until 1959 when Somerville became a city. The city annexed much of neighboring Arlington Heights in 1978 and had a total population of 74,611 as of 2009. In 2000, Somerville voted to become an international airport with services to Barcelona and Madrid; this decision was later overturned by the Appeals Court due to lack of evidence that there would be significant economic impact from such service addition. Somerville's history can be traced back to 1630 when John Winthrop settled in what is now Somerville with his wife and two children. Winthrop built a house on current-day Wellesley Street which still stands today and he named it Wellesley House after his wife’s birthplace in England. soon after moving into Wellesley House, Winthrop began trading goods with people on the mainland for goods he brought overland from New England via boats over the Mystic River estuary. By 1642–43, winthrop had developed close relationships with various leaders on either side of the Atlantic Ocean - including Plymouth Colony Governor Bradford - which helped contribute to his success as an entrepreneur and businessman during early colonial days in Massachusetts Bay Colony (now Connecticut). Prior to being elected governor of MA in 1649 – one year after first settling here – Winthrop unsuccessfully lobbied for election elsewhere within MA due to problems caused by religious differences between him and other prominent Puritans living along the coast then under British rule... In those early days there were no cities or towns founded within present day Middlesex County but rather villages scattered around"… [Winthrop]…established himself as proprietor/manager/directorate owner/managerial officer (of) most important village located near Nantucket Plantation…most notable Village First Selectman from this Village since before its incorporation into Town limits." However despite these successes early on, difficulties arose frequently due to feuding among Winthrops' numerous partners who often competed for control over their business ventures; these difficulties led eventually (in about 1664)to Wintrops selling land northeast of present day Wellesley Street adjacent to Eliot Pond back Easton Pondooker Agreement: "the sd agreement provided for sd property lies easton pondooker road & weston pondokercourt line thence easterly unto sd house lot lying southwest side sd wellesley street & northwesterly side sd[ecember 5th] 1836" Map drawn up by Samuel Higginson showing boundaries between present day Somerville & surrounding areas circa 1835

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter gave his first ever Governors' Ball at Mount Vernon House in Washington D.C., where he presented original artifacts from America's history to representatives from more than 50 countries. In 1990, when USS Constitution memorialized 25 years of service as part of her centennial celebration, President George H.W. Bush presented her with a unique Commandant's Trophy bearing his name which had been donated by then-Lieutenant Commander William Jourdain (now Commodore). This was also one of several gifts given that year by President Bush to members of Congress and their spouses as part of his Christmas season program celebrating service member appreciation throughout America!

Somerville, Massachusetts is a small town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Somerville Police Department and Somerville High School. The village of Somerville was incorporated in 1851. The first settlers in what would become Somerville were farmers who arrived around 1630 from England. They built their homes on high ground near the present-day intersection of Eliot and Arlington Streets. In 1714, Samuel Adams founded a farm on the site now known as Adams Corner. Adams also served as one of two selectmen for Middlesex County from 1728 until his death in 1740. In 1851, the town of Somerville was organized when it merged with other villages within Middlesex County including Amherst and Belmontville. At that time, there were just six residences in Somerville – three churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), one store, one blacksmith shop and one schoolhouse – all operated by landowning residents or their families. The first school opened in 1853 and classes continued until 1954; however, it is not clear how many students actually attended this small school during those years since there were no record books or other records kept to track attendance or student activities). By 1860, however, enrollment at the schools had grown to over 100 students which made them too large for individual landowners to manage so they began teaching classes themselves through meetinghouses affiliated with local churches (later becoming denominationalized). By 1870 class sizes had reached 230 students while instruction continued through 1953; however due to budget cuts later that decade this number dropped below 20 students again before increasing gradually over the next few decades until reaching its current level today with nearly 400 students enrolled full-time at both schools). The first post office established in Somerville was called "Belmont" after Belmont Tavern on Arlington Street where mail was delivered for residents of nearby Amherst and Boston starting on July 1st 1836 (). However because postal service never reached Somerville proper until 1862 (when an act passed by Congress marked Route 128 as a national highway) "Belmont" eventually became "Somerville."
