Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Somerville was John Winthrop in 1636. The town's incorporation took place on July 24, 1792. At its peak in 1820, Somerville had a population of 15,000 people. However, the rapid growth of the city and its need for transportation caused many businesses and residents to move away from Somerville over the next several decades. By 1860 only 5% of the town's population remained after it lost most of its economic importance due to Hartford's rise as an American metropolis. However, by 1930 Somerville had recovered somewhat and now boasted a population of 7,500 people living primarily in or near the downtown core. However this prosperity did not last long as World War II brought about heavy IBM production within reach of Connecticut and other states which negatively impacted local businesses; furthermore manufacturing left Somerville for good around 1970 despite early efforts by Mayor Raymond Latham to keep it alive through marketing initiatives such as "The Town That Taught Me how To Do Things". In recent years there has been renewed interest in and investment in property within SOMERVILLE vicinity including: revitalization efforts focusing on downtown cores mixed-use buildings along riverfronts; addition of new elementary schools (Northwestern High School & Southwestern Elementary School); redevelopment/renovation/creation of a large retail park adjacent to Interstate 695; condemnation & seizure by city authorities dairies (& associated barns) located on Route 9 east side & west side close to towns line - these are being redeveloped into apartment complexes with restaurants inside while still retaining some agricultural land surrounding them

Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,693 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Middlesex County and the second-largest municipality in Massachusetts after Boston. Somerville is home to both the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) and Emerson College. The first settler in what is now Somerville was John Winthrop, who arrived there in 1630. Winthrop's descendants became an important part of early Somerville history as merchants and landowners. In 1801, when Worcester County was created from parts of Middlesex and Essex Counties, Somerville became one of its first townships. The town had a population of 639 within two years. In 1922, the Boston Elevated Railway built a line from downtown Boston to Northampton on the southern edge of Somerville; this created new demand for housing in what had been a sparsely populated area near college campuses and other major city amenities. As more people moved into Somerville, land prices began to go up – which led to some development along Route 128 (now called Arlington Avenue). During World War II, much of Somerville was destroyed bybombing raids during the Battle of Midway; however, most buildings were rebuilt following damage caused by fire or shellfire. After the war ended, many manufacturing jobs were lost due to automation; but since then many businesses have opened up in Somerville thanks to their presence on Route 128 and elsewhere around town.
