Salem, Massachusetts is home to the national guard and its History can be traced back to the early 17th century. The Salem National Guard was first organized in 1692 as a militia company under the command of Captain John Winthrop. In 1785, the National Guard was disbanded and its members were merged into the Massachusetts Militia. In 1804, Salem became one of the states that ratified the United States Constitution. On July 4th, 1930, President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized establishment of a state guard unit in Salem as part of New England Defense Association Plan II which aimed to create an 8-member brigade for security in eastern Massachusetts. The brigade was activated on November 1st and served until 1942 when it was disbanded due to World War II service commitments. On October 1st, 1943, a new Salem National Guard Brigade was activated with 3 battalions consisting of artillery soldiers from Lawrence County and 10 infantry soldiers from Hampden County. The brigade served until 1946 when it again disbanded due to World War II service commitments.In 1948, following passage of the National Security Act Amendments of 1947 (Public Law 96-4), the U.S Congress created two branches of military forces: an army reserve component and a navy reserve component which had their own organizational charts and uniforms separate from those of regular army troops On May 14th 1951 President Harry S Truman issued Presidential Directive No417 which called for activation by localities or units of national guard services all volunteer civil police agencies formed since September 11th attacks On June 2nd 1951 localities across America received notification that they must call upon their respective state guard units if they wished to participate in law enforcement activities during this time period The first major deployment for state guards took place on July 5th when over 100 citizens from Quincy were drafted into duty with Company I - 12th MA Regiment at Newton Barracks near Boston Harbor Company I participated in Operation Neptune's Spear during Vietnam while Company K - 7 th MA Regiment patrolled New York City suburbs during la 1968 Democratic National Convention
From the moment Americans declared their independence from Great Britain, they had a National Guard. The National Guard was an organization that was set up to help protect the nation and its people. The first National Guard units were created in 1792 and were called the “Fenwick Rangers”. These units were disbanded in 1802 because of the American War of Independence. However, the National Guard was re-established in 1861 by Abraham Lincoln during his time as president. At this time, there were over 100,000 soldiers who were part of the National Guard. The National Guardsmen played a vital role during World War II because they could be called into action at any time to help provide security for America and its citizens. In 1947, the President Harry S Truman issued an executive order which established the Department of Defense (DOD) Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). This department would deal with all matters relating to military defense within our borders. With this new department, it became easier for members of the National Guard to receive training and equipment so that they could be ready when needed. Furthermore, it also allowed for better communication between different parts of the military so that each unit could function as one big unit when needed. Since then, the Department of Defense (DOD) has consistently increased funding for both active duty and reserve members of the National Guard so that they can remain available should something happen to their commander or government officials.
