That same year Captain John Smith landed at Portsmouth Island off Boston Harbor with his party of thirteen men searching for a new route to New England following their failed attempt to find an inland path through present day Maine. On December 5th, 1592 Captain John Smith sailed into Boston Harbor on board his ship Discovery along with five other vessels which included three ships carrying colonists - The Mayflower Compact had been ratified only two days earlier! The first commercial shipment of goods bearing the name "Salem" took place when Samuel Slater bought three tons of saltpeter from fishermen near Portsmouth Island on November 1st 1801. The first published reference to "Marine Gifts From Salem" can be found in an advertisement placed by Ayer & Peake entitled "Gift Of His Majesty's Ship Bounty Of Plymouth Dock". This ad read: "For Sale - One Hundred Pounds sterling - variously carved wooden ware including Porcelain Tiles A very pretty piece having a figure o' Neptune holding a dolphin beneath her arm Refreshments will be given by Messrs Ayer & Peake throughout the Evening." Two years later Slater sold another ton of saltpeter for £8 12s 6d which put him within touching distance of becoming one thousand pounds ($1,500) ahead of anyone else at that time! It should be noted that this sale occurred some 350 miles away from Bristol where Slater had originally come ashore looking for saltpeter! By 1807 Slater was selling merchandise totaling over $10 000 annually! In 1808 David Brewster founded Dartmouth College located just across the street from where he lived until his death six years later. Brewster was primarily responsible for developing Dartmouth into one of America's top universities while also establishing it as one of its leading shipping ports-.
