Salem was founded in 1621 by Puritan settlers. The town was named for Salem, Massachusetts, the birthplace of John Winthrop, who led the Pilgrims to America in 1620. The first English settlers in Salem were soldiers from the British army stationed there during King George's War. The military service of some of these soldiers and their families provided one of the earliest memories of what would become Salem. In 1764, General John Forbes relieved Colonel Thomas Gage of his command at West Point on Long Island and brought with him supplies and reinforcements for the American Revolution. This event is generally considered to be when Salem became an official town. In 1838, General William Tecumseh Sherman's Union Army marched through Salem on their way to enter Boston during the Civil War. A group of local citizens gathered around a fire put up by them to welcome the troops as they passed through town. This event is also commonly considered to be when Salem became a city. After independence was won in 1865, state legislators decided that Salem should become a county seat; it did so in 1871. The first courthouse in town was built in 1892; it burned down in 1957 but was replaced by a more modern structure that still stands today.
