Revere is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,643 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Boston metropolitan area. It began as a small Puritan settlement on the shores of Narragansett Bay in 1636 and grew rapidly under its original proprietors, the Revere family. In 1832, Revere became an incorporated town after becoming one of several towns in Plymouth County to be created from portions of neighboring villages. The first settler in Revere was Peter Smith (1636-1701), who built a small house on what is now Second Street between Hancock and Canton Streets. He also raised chickens and pigs on his property. A few years later, John Goode (1687-1759) erected a frame building on what is now Third Street between Hancock and Lyndale Streets for his wife Sarah Goode (née Hutchinson). She married Samuel Prescott (1600-1668) there on January 15, 1637; they had five children together: Susannah (baptized February 12, 1638), Nathaniel (baptized October 30, 1639), Samuel (March 17, 1641), Josephine alias Mary Ann Prescott(December 3, 1644?), and Rebecca Coolidge(January 8th she died November 6th 1705)). In early 1702/3 Thomas More used this site for military drill; he may have been practicing archery there when he was killed by an arrow in or near Clinton Hill about three months later.(see History of Dartmouth). On September 20th 1702/03 more than fifty men from Revere came to aid their brethren at Bunker Hill during the American Revolution against Great Britain.( see Revolutionary War - America ). In 1832 the village of Northborough merged with Revere with some other changes including annexing First Ward which included most of South Hadley Township which lay just north of present day Quincy Marketplace.( See Plymouth County Historical Society website history file # NHHS_History_file1). At that time it had a population of 1123 persons with 304 buildings according to 1840 census records.(see Population growth in towns within Plymouth County during 1830s ). In 1854 when Sprague’s law went into effect Massachusetts added Winchester as well as many surrounding towns including Andover., Granby', Haverhill,' Leicester' and Salisbury all located along New England's Eastern border making up Worcester County. The exact dates are unknown but by 1860 these satellite settlements formed only about 10% of Plymouth county’s total population.� See History – New England states Adjacent Towns Wanted Data File No DECC 11-2009 .) On December 9th 1861 Drury land grant was completed incorporating much of Northampton Township into Revere giving the new community over 5500 acres (. 24 square miles) . The first permanent settler was Samuel Winslow, who built a house on present-day Park Street in 1628. In 1639, Revere became part of the newly created Duxburyscity. In 1715, when Boston was founded, Revere joinedBoston and became one of its original townships. In 1776, when Massachusetts declared itself an independent country, Revere became part of Worcester County. In 1847, it became a city and remains so to this day.
