Revere was founded in 1636 by Captain John Revere and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named after the Revere family's home in Ipswich, Massachusetts. In 1795, Revere became a part of the United States of America. In 1825, Rev. Jedediah Morse travelled through Revere on his way to establish a line of telegraph wires between Boston and New York City. When he arrived at the home of Capt. John Revere, he found that the house had been abandoned for many years and was in need of restoration. Morse ordered the restoration project begun and it continued until 1837 when it was finished by Commodore James Ketchum with funding from President Andrew Jackson. During World War II, Revere played an important role as one of two main landing sites for troops coming ashore on Cape Cod during Operation Neptune's Spear. The town also played a significant role in the Battle of Bunker Hill which took place on June 6th, 1916 while American forces were fighting their way up against British Forces under Field Marshal Douglas Haig following their successful assault on Mount Hood in Oregon. The battle resulted in over 100 British casualties with only 9 Americans killed or wounded; however, this did not stop General George Washington from issuing an order condemning the actions taken by his commanders at Bunker Hill: "I cannot forbear expressing my regret that such measures have been called for and executed within our borders."
