In 1837, Quincys first coffee house opened and served coffee from a small pot on the porch of the local rectory. In 1840, an idea to have a more formal business structure for Quincy's coffeehouse came about when John Fenton met with Reverend Amos Kendall to discuss starting a school for black girls in Quincy. Reverend Kendall agreed to help start such a school and offered his home as its first location. In 1845, Quincy's Coffee House became America's First African American Coffee House when it opened to serve mulatto and white customers alike. The popularity of Quincy's coffeehouses led to their growth into larger businesses over time - Fenton Coffee House continued operating as an employee-owned business until 1954; while derivative establishments such as Joe's Crab Shack began providing similar services in 1960s and 1970s across Boston and other cities throughout New England. Quincy was first settled by English colonists in 1636 as part of what is now Norfolk County. In 1713, when Boston became the capital of America, Quincy became part of that city. In 1837, after Boston's incorporation as a city, Quincy became part of Worcester County and remained so until 1959 when it reverted to Hampshire County. Quincy has a temperature range from 0 degrees Celsius (−18 degrees Fahrenheit) during winter to 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) during summer; its average annual precipitation is about 12 inches (30 cm). The first white settler in Quincy was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1636 with the Mayflower Compact from England and founded Adamsbury Village on present-day Perkins Road. His settlement failed because there were no trees suitable for building homes and he died soon after arrival. A second attempt at colonization by Pilgrims led by Reverend Jonas Edwards followed in 1638 but this time success resulted in the founding of Northborough Village on present-day West Street near where the Amtrak station stands today. Other early settlers included Nicholas Moon (1640-1700), Ebenezer Winslow (1641-1715), John Goodrich (1646-1715), Jabez Dunster (1649-1712), Jeremiah Winthrop (1652-1728), Increase Mather (Mayflower Compact passenger/ captain/ missionary/ theologian/ public servant—“One Hundred Years After”—Boston Gazette published an article about his life entitled “An Account Of The Lives And Death Of Some Early American Patriots Who Lived In Great Britain” dated January 10th, 1795)—and Daniel Webster who served two terms as Governor of New York from 1800 to 1802 before moving to Worcester County to become Representative from MA’s Second District from 1804 to 1807 Atwood also served one term as Mayor of Quincy before becoming Lieutenant Governor under Gov Norton amid gubernatorial impeachment proceedings which ended with his conviction and removal from office following revelations related to graft charges against him
