Quincy, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Quincy is part of the Boston–Worcester–Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. Quincy is home to Wellesley College and to Mount Holyoke College. Quincy has been inhabited by the Massachusett tribe for over two hundred years. The first European Settlement in what is now Quincy was made by John Winthrop on December 12, 1630 as a trading post on the mouth of the Winnipesaukee River. On October 14, 1638, after his exploration of New England began, Plymouth Colony's first governor Bradford bestowed upon John Winthrop (1605-1649) an initial grant of land comprising present-day Quincy and parts of neighboring townships including Walpole and Granby. By 1641 there were ninety families living in what became Quincy; eleven families had moved from other settlements within Plymouth Colony during that year alone. The town site was chosen because it would be possible to build a highway between Boston and Worcester without having to cross any bodies of water; this led to its nickname "the Highwaytown." In 1781 or 1782 Samuel Adams founded Adams Academy which became one of America's leading colleges. The town voted unanimously in 1794 to become part of Worcester County when it was split off from Middlesex County; Quincy annexed portions of Wolcott and Northampton counties along with Arlington Heights and Charlestown in 1802 but retained its independent charter until 1835 when it joined the new Commonwealth as part of Worcester Township . Quincy is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and was first settled by English colonists in 1630. The town became an incorporated city in 1847 and celebrated its centennial in 1907. Quincy's history can be traced back to 1630 when English colonists arrived in what is now Quincy, MA to explore the new world. Quincy was originally called "Canton" because it was on the border of present-day Worcester and Norfolk counties. In 1635, John Winthrop founded a small settlement there named Canterbury which developed into what is now Quincy due to its fertile soil and strategic location: midway between Boston and Cambridge on the Eastern Seaboard. England had just won their war with France and were expanding their territory; they needed new land for their growing population so they awarded Plymouth Colony (now Rhode Island) to John Winthrop as part of a compensation deal after France attacked English colonies twice during King Philip's War (1605-1611). This grant allowed Plymouth Colony to grow rapidly while still being under British rule; within 10 years, it had reached 2,000 settlers. In 1630, English colonists arrived in what is now Quincy along with other early settlements including Canterbury and Woburn (later Walthamstow), MA due to increased pressure from Native Americans who raided settlements near Ipswich Harbor on Cape Cod Peninsula nightly for food sources available only during summer months when boats could cross safely from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard anchored at Wellfleet Harbor on Martha's Vineyard Sound across open ocean to Supply Cove on Cape Cod Bay where goods could be unloaded for shipment back home days earlier than usual because of lack of sea lanes during winter months!
