Pittsfield is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pittsfield was settled by English colonists in 1636 and was named for Sir William Pitt, 1st Baronet. Pittsfield's first white settler, John White, arrived in 1641. The town became a village on February 12, 1774, when it split from Southborough Township. It became a town on December 3, 1846. Pittsfield is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and has been mentioned as such by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The name "Pittsfield" means "place where wheat grows." On April 10, 1600, Plymouth Colony's first settlement was established at what is now Pittsburg Landing on Narragansett Bay; its original nucleus consisted of only ten men under the leadership of Captains John Smith and Matthew Hale. One hundred years later (1636), English colonists began to settle in what would become Pittsfield after being induced to do so by nearby Plymouth Colony's decision to build Fort Saybrook on Stamford Hill instead of developing their land further inland because they were short of land for farming purposes. In 1641 John White landed his party at what is now Northampton Cove on Cape Cod with five other settlers including his brother-in-law Nicholas Noyes who had accompanied him there as shipwright or surveyor - thus beginning what would be known as Hampshire County history The early pioneers were successful farmers who raised corn, beans and other crops while also operating some small businesses such as sawmills and gristmills which produced flour for local baking powder needs; however this type of farming eventually gave way to more intensive production during the eighteenth century due to increased trade with Great Britain which led to an increase in population pressures along with improved transportation technologies that made it easier for farmers to export their goods throughout New England . This period also saw important changes within Northeastern society as well – such as increasing investment into education system through founding of colleges like Dartmouth College and Williams College – which prepared young men for professional lives outsideof agriculture . In additionto this growth within Northeastern society there were also large influxes of European immigrants who began settlingata Boston (later renamed Toronto) during this time frame; these newcomers brought new ideas about democracy, capitalism etc., which contributed significantly towards changing Northeastern society permanently
The United States National Guard has been a part of American society for centuries. Originally, the National Guard was made up of volunteers from ease and militia units in each state. Over time, the National Guard grew into a full-time force. The first national guard unit was activated on October 15, 1792 when Captain George Washington organized a battalion of Company D of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment (New York) Line Militia to support his military campaigns in Pennsylvania and New York. By 1800, there were over 20,000 active duty members in the National Guard. As America entered World War I, the Ready Reserve Corps became available to serve in any war situation without having to wait for call-up or mobilization. On December 12, 1917 President Woodrow Wilson issued an Executive Order creating the Territorial Army as part of the National Defense Program. This order increased the size and organization of National Guardsmen by 10%. The next year saw more than 1 million men mobilized for World War I; this number would eventually exceed 5 million by 1918. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered that all state militias be turned into reserve forces status and placed within the Department of Defense with specific responsibility for defense against domestic terrorism and sabotage activities. Assembling these reservists had become increasingly difficult as enrollment rates among men age 18-25 had decreased from 50% during 1932 to just 25%. In 1935 Congress passed Public Law 91-566 which called for all male citizens who were registered with either county sheriff or probate court as electors to be called up for service during emergencies affecting interstate commerce or foreign nations not involved in war (eastern seaboard states). This callups expanded rapidly throughout 1936 until 1942 when registration peaked at 1 million citizens although only 350 thousand enlisted due to lack of interest in serving abroad while most civilians returned home before hostilities ended In 1945 almost three quarters (77%)of all males ages 18-25 who registered were called up because they could no longer vote because they had reached 21 years old &&&&&&&&& By 1948 less than one percent (0.1%)of those aged 18-25 who registered were called up while more than two thirds (70%)were drafted||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The National Guard has been providing service to the United States for over 120 years. The history of the National Guard can be traced back to 1846 when President James K. Polk created the first U.S. military forces to protect American borders and interests in Central America. In 1861, after Lincoln was elected president, the Union army invaded Maryland and Virginia in order to assert control over these states and prevent secession. The Confederate army responded by invading northern states such as New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. In 1863, Union General George Custer lost his horse while attacking a Confederate position near Coldwater Creek outside of Springfield, Illinois; this event is considered one of the greatest battlefield losses in American history. After being asked by President Abraham Lincoln if he wished to remain a part of the Union or secede, General Grant offered his services to help lead an all-out assault on Chattanooga, Tennessee; however, because of his previous battle experience with Sherman’s Army during the Civil War – which had ended two months earlier – Grant was not selected for this task. In 1865, following Vicksburg in Mississippi and Mobile Bay in Alabama (the last major engagement of the Civil War), Reconstruction began in America through various acts such as passage of the Fourteenth Amendment which granted voting rights to African Americans; an act known as “The Emancipation Proclamation”; and appointment of black generals such as Ulysses S. Grant and Meade who helped lead troops into battle against Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. As Reconstruction progressed into the 1920s some African Americans became branches of white organizations such as The Ku Klux Klan but overall it remained largely peaceful until World War II when interracial violence became common due to discrimination against minorities by white majorities throughout much of America.
