Pittsfield, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,853 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield is part of the Boston metropolitan area. It lies on the border of Berkshire and Franklin counties. The first settler in Pittsfield was John Adams who arrived in 1636. The town site was surveyed by Abraham Deacon in 1762 and given to Colonel Samuel Adams for his home farm. TheAdamses erected a schoolhouse and other buildings in 1814 after purchases from Jabez Young and others of land around the present-day State House square. George Washington visited Pittsfield in 1788 while on his way to Cambridge to campaign for president that year. When he reached Pittsfield he stopped at Mr. Adams' house on High Street where he had dinner with his family before continuing on to Cambridge. In 1801, Congress granted a charter to the College of William & Mary which became Pittsfield's first public educational institution under state law (later renamed Brown University). On December 5, 1800, when President James Kapp Prentice signed an act creating Franklin County (now Berkshire), Pittsfield became one of its five townships within Franklin County... In 1840, as part of efforts to promote heavy industry along what would become Route 128 nearby, Congress passed an act authorising creation of a railroad through Warren and Devonshire Counties connecting Concord and Worcester via Pittsfields mills—the first railway system ever built outside British colonies... By 1850 there were more than 1,000 residents living inPittsburghers built brick homes throughout much of rural central Berkshires until World War II when most houses were replaced with aluminum or plastic structures due to wartime scarcity of metal components Despite high levels of industrial production during World War II only about 10% (1 out 6)of all aluminum used domestically came from Pittstown; instead it came primarily from facilities near Buffalo New York City The post-war years saw significant growth as many people left their jobs for new ones either downtown or further out into suburban areas such as Amherst or Northampton Counties However manufacturing declined briefly beginning around 1970 before rebounding by 2000 causing joblessness among some communities especially those experiencing rapid growth Mainstreaming has led to rising costs associated with operating these mills now impacting every community including those still reliant on them

Pittsfield is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield was first settled in 1635 by Puritans who were seeking religious toleration in a then-wichespotting colony. The name "Pittsfield" is taken from the home of Sir John Pitcairn, 1st Baronet and captain of HMS Bounty under Captain James Cook. Pittsfield became part of the United Kingdom following World War II and lost its status as an independent city when it merged with other towns in Hampshire County to form the present-day town. The history of Pittsfield began with Puritan settlers who moved to what is now Hampshire County from Connecticut in 1635. They were looking for religious tolerance in a then-wichespotting colony and found it hereabouts. As word spread about this new land, more people came to look for property here and the settlement grew quickly. By 1770, there were over 100 residents living here. In 1838, Pittsfield removed all public buildings (except one church) to create an open area called Hyde Park which later became known as Main Street. On July 4th, 1839, the first post office was established at Pittsfield with Wm Higginson as Postmaster General; it operated until 1840 when Samuel Chase took over as Postmaster General due to competition from Boston's New England Telegraph Company." In addition to its role as a center for trade and commerce during colonial times, Pittsfield also saw significant growth after World War I ended thanks to industrialization in nearby New England towns such as Plymouth and Springfield.
