Pittsfield, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 29 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield is located on the east side of the Berkshires and north of Salisbury. Pittsfield is part of the Springfield–West Springfield, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what would become Pittsfield was made in 1777 by Captain John Sullivan and his men as they roamed through land that now includes much of eastern Berkshire County. In 1812, Colonel Peterborough laid out a township for himself and others east of Boston on what is now Northampton Street. The town's first store was built in 1814 on Green Street just south of modern day First Avenue. In 1825, the legislature created Pittsfield Township as a separate municipality with its own government and police force. It remains an independent municipality to this day. Pittsburg Landing was an early site where American forces landed during the Revolutionary War under General George Washington's command after being driven from Boston Harbor by British fleets on December 15, 1775. Aftermath of the war saw heavy military action along both sides including skirmishes at nearby Ipswich and North Adams which led to more than 50 dead and over 100 wounded Untied troops who lay inert along Patriot Row until October 10 when William Howe's fleet arrived off-shore to avoid destruction by colonial regulars under General Samuel Adams who then destroyed all but two guns of HMS "Fenian" (the only English ship present). A plaque near Ipswich marks one such engagement where another unit Monument Hill Barracks stands today within easy walking distance of both sites commemorating those killed or wounded there during that fateful engagement fought November 8th & 9th 1775 between Patriots & Tories also known as Battle Of Bunker Hill taking place less than three miles from home!
