Pittsfield is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 34,956 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield is part of the Springfield–Newton, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered to the east by Northampton and to the south by Pittsfield Township. The township was formed from portions of both townships in 1833. The first settlers in Pittsfield were Samuel Sewall and his family who arrived in 1775 from Rhode Island. They built a house on what is now Main Street near where Grafton Street meets Interstate 93. Other early settlers included John Morse and his wife Hannah who came about 1786, Isaac Farnsworth and his family who came about 1789, Benjamin Higginson who settled in 1800 and Increase Richards who platted what are now Park Row and Nicholas Farm around 1802-04. A school district was organized in 1897 with two schools: one for white children and one for African American children which became known as "Pittsfield Public Schools". In 1902 it merged with other districts in Berkshire County to form the Berkshire School District #1 which remains today. In 1916 Pittsfield residents supported an effort to secede from Massachusetts because of their dislike of World War I draft registration requirements that they believed would lead to racial discrimination against Japanese Americans living in Boston during the war years. The measure failed but raised awareness among local citizens of what they considered unfair treatment by state authorities during wartime (see America's Home Front). In 1922 Pittsfield voters passed a resolution calling for repeal of Prohibition which had become law following passage of the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution that year. This led to increased social activity throughout the town as people discussed ways to oppose prohibition without going too far into illegal behavior themselves. After several months of negotiations between representatives from different factions within the town, Repeal Act No 2 was passed on November 3, 1922 setting up a monopoly for beer sales within limited boundaries called "the bottle" while allowing manufacturing/distribution outside those boundaries subject to applicable taxes according as amended by act no 656 effective January 1st 1923; see also: alcohol prohibition laws of New England since 1919).
