Pittsfield, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 24,895 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of Berkshire County's six towns and has a population of 18,521 as of 2019. Pittsfield is part of the Boston–Cambridge-Newton, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by English Puritans in 1630. The original name for the town was "Frye". Pittsfield took its name from John Pitts, an early settler and member of the General Court who donated land to form the town center. In 1712, Congregationalist minister Samuel Sewall organized a church in what is now Pittsburg Square and named it "Pittsfield." A year later he also built a school there. In 1714-1715, Colonel George Washington visited Pittsfield during his crossing of the Connecticut River from New York to Boston and made not one but two gifts to this small settlement: One hundred acres (40 ha) on which he erected a house (later known as Independence Hall), and another five acres (20 ha) near present day Miltonbury Pond where he planted corn and beans. In 1788–89 Captain John Smith explored much of eastern Massachusetts before reaching Boston via way through Pittsfield on his journey into Canada. On July 5th while passing through this small community on his way southward alongthe Merrimack River he observed several huts or buildings "of those rudely constructed with brick or quoin [stone], without any roof" - these were likely the foundations for what would become Independence Hall. By 1800 only one building still stood in Pittsfield - that which served as Smith's Tavern/House; however some evidence suggests that it may have been replaced by an earlier structure contemporaneous with Independence Hall. In 1807-1808 James Perry mined gold near present day Plympton; when news reached America that gold had been found in California overrate prices caused great concern throughout New England; accordingly various committees were set up to investigate all aspects related thereto including surveys done both at home and abroad; among these members sat representatives from Rhode Island & Massachusettes (& others); finally on October 15th 1810 Council decided upon measures necessary for exportation & sale thereof etc., appointing Isaac Hill as agent #1... John Copley donated land north of Plymouth Meeting Road (now Route 128) to be used for agricultural purposes – this donation formed what are today Perry Woods Cemetery and Perry Farmstead Park across from Interstate 90). This area became known as "Copleystown". The first post office opened in 1827 in Copleystown under the name "Plymouth Meeting". Pittsfield residents voted 3-2 against incorporation into Worcester after their representativeynamed John Quincy Adams attended an election meeting thereopposed to incorporation into Worcester but did not campaign nor vote ballots because he was then serving as President during Burr's impeachment trial! Adams' actions prior to being elected president tendered suspicions about him being biased against Worcester incorporation so they elected instead Nathan Hale who supported incorporationsuch questions had arisen before.) After Adams leaving office more than $600 worth of votes were cast by residents refusing incorporation into Worcester due primarily to economic reasons though other towns within Berkshire County likewise declined offers for annexation due lack of support). In 1870 fire destroyed most partsowneast sideof Main Street between High Street & Spencer Avenue creatinga devastating loss especially given that no insurance could be obtained until well after rebuildments commenced includingraising money thru auctions offrenowned mills located nearby.).
