After years of growth and development over time, the city limits were expanded again on December 1st 2009 when Northampton Township was added to make up for lost territory caused by PennEast's acquisition of portions of Amherst Township from Boston Municipal Corporation

Pittsfield is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts. The town was first settled by the Pequot and Narragansett Indian tribes in the early 17th century. In 1636, James I of England granted a land patent to John Winthrop, son of Pilgrim founder John Winthrop. This grant helped define Pittsfield as a center for Puritan religious activity. In 1764, Pittsfield was chartered as a town by royal charter from King George III. The town's population peaked at 25,000 around 1800 but declined rapidly following the American Revolution. The main reason for this decline was that Pittsfield did not become involved in the Revolutionary War and suffered heavy losses due to taxes and military engagements. After the war, Pittsfield experienced a period of growth due to its location on Route 3 and its new cotton mills which began production in 1810. However, this growth also brought about problems such as crime and social unrest which plagued the town until the late 19th century when it began to rebound somewhat thanks to its vibrant cultural life. Today, Pittsfield remains an active community with strong ties to both local businesses and government institutions
Pittsfield was founded by Increase Mather in 1692. The town is named after Reverend John Pitt, a religious leader who helped found the Anglican church in Pittsfield. In 1777, the town was renamed for General George Washington.
