The town has had two mayors since its incorporation as a municipality: George Aiken (1824-26) and Lewis Hill (1939-41). On July 8, 1777, when America declared independence from Great Britain, Captain John Endicott organized a company of 29 men to transport goods to Lexington on horseback across Lake Quincunx toload supplies for what would become the Fourth Continental Congress. This event is generally referred to as "the Opening Day." In 1801 Governor Edmund Andros approved an act granting pecuniary aid to various towns that had helped provide munitions for General Washington during his successful Invasion of Canada
