Peabody is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–New Bedford–Fall River, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1638 by Puritan colonists from England. The name "Peabody" comes from the Pequot word "pawbicans". In 1795, John Quincy Adams and his family moved to Peabody from Quincy, Massachusetts. After Adams' death in 1828, his widow began to manage the property as a gift from her husband's estate. At her death in 1892 it passed to her son Samuel Latham Quincy Jr., who continued to operate it until 1959 when it was acquired by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as part of its acquisition of all land within the Town limits pursuant to its official incorporation as a village on October 1, 1958. In 1906 George Romney purchased 6 acres (2 ha) northwest of town for $5 per acre ($140 per hectare). Construction began on Romney's Sand Hill Farms which included a small chicken farm and went into production that year. The eggs produced were used forBoston baking and other products; they were also traded internationally. Romney sold most of his holdings in 1961 and retired from agriculture due to health concerns but continued to produce eggs until he died in 1978 aged 90 years old. According to 2000 US Census figures,[3] there are 8 businesses with over fifty employees located within or affiliated with Peabody: four small businesses (less than 100 employees), two large businesses (over 500 employees), one hospital/medical center (including an ambulatory surgery center), one office park/industrial complex, one shopping mall/mallridescent district, and three schools—one public school (grades kindergarten through twelve), one private school (#7 Putnam Elementary School), and two religious schools (#1 First Baptist Church School & #6 Holy Cross Parish School). Of these eight firms only four are considered “large” employers: two hospitals/medical centers (Hospira Pharmaceuticals Incorporated and Adventist HealthSouthwest Medical Center Corporation) - both with more than 500 employees - one office park/industrial complex (>500 employees) - One shopping mall/mallridescent district (~500 employees) - One school (#7 Putnam Elementary School)—the only public school in town—and two religious schools (#1 First Baptist Church School & #6 Holy Cross Parish School). Even though these large employers have employment totals greater than half those reported for “small” employers among firms classified as “large” employers by size alone,- these establishments account for only about 25% of total job creation between 2000[4] and 2010[5], indicating that while larger workplaces may provide some jobs throughout their lifetime period--the vast majority created new jobs during this time frame inside or outsideof Peabody itself. As stated before nearly all residents employed within any given firm listed below work fewer than fifty hours each week; thus little or no payroll data exists documenting employee turnover rates whatsoever! The Peabody Museum is located in the town. The first Europeans to visit Peabody were the French in 1602 and 1603 on their way from Canada to find new land for France. Lieutenant John Winthrop led an expedition in 1636 which discovered Peabody Bay and named it after his friend and neighbor, Colonel William Peabody of Ipswich, Massachusetts. The first permanent settler in what would become Peabody was Captain Benjamin Church who built a house on the site of present-day Central Park in 1741-1742. In 1821, General John Fenton purchased 3 miles (5 km) of waterfront property along the Charles River from Reverend Samuel Eliot for $1,000 (). The portage route between Boston and New York City then connected Fenton's property with that of Nathan Greenough which he inherited from his fatherqqq . For many years during this period fishing was the primary economic activity around Peabody Harbor. In 1865 Congress passed an act providing funds for a canal system through Rhode Island and Connecticut called "Old Ironsides". This project included building locks at Pawtucket Falls to carry water over the falls into Narragansett Bay so that goods could be transported further downriver by riverboat. As part of this effort General Amos Butterfield organized local farmers to provide labor on these projects as well as other Agricultural Development Acts throughout America during Reconstruction Era qqq . These efforts helped create one of America's most important agricultural regions while also contributing to social change within townspeople qqq . By 1898 it had reached its peak commercial importance with shipbuilding being one of the few major industries still managed by small farmers qqq . However with increased travel times due to railroads development transportation services became more important for both people and businesses; this caused commercial decline until World War II whenShipbuilding resumed as one of largest employers
