Peabody is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Peabody were the Lenape who established a village on the site of modern-day Peabody in 1639. In 1796, Captain John Smith discovered coal and oil shale here and named it "Haven" for his discovery; but he did not develop it further because there was no mineral wealth to be found. In 1812, Nicholas Morse opened up a sawmill in what is now downtown Peabody with two stories high and began producing lumber from local pine trees. By 1825, Morse had built an addition with eight stories that became known as the Great Western Millinery School (later known as Brown University). In 1861, General Robert Ewing bought land near present-day downtown Peabody and set out to build what would become one of America's largest cotton plantations - Ewing's Cotton Kingdom – with over 400 slaves working on 20 acres (80 m2) per slave. The following year, Peabody residents voted unanimously to secede from Worcester County and form their own town under the name of "Albany". However, due to financial difficulties caused by Ewing's plantation enterprise – including fires that destroyed much of his cotton crop – Albany eventually dissolved into ruin during Reconstruction era America. However, interest inPEABODY meant business as usual for many locals when they heard about Operation Paperclip which brought military veterans to PEABODY between 1946-1948 for various purposes such as education and work opportunities; these soldiers often contributed greatly towards economic development within PEABODY while also changing its landscape around-the-clock! Peabody was a town in Massachusetts until the early 20th century. It is now part of Worcester, MA. In 1636, the Dutch East India Company established a trading post at Peabody. The company's first major purchase was a smallpox vaccine from England in 1637. In 1640, the British government established an English settlement at Peabody as part of its efforts to control the Native American population and protect English trade interests in North America. The town grew rapidly due to its location and favorable economic conditions. By 1760, Peabody had a population of 489 people and was home to six churches, two schools, and three taverns. The 18th century saw several important moments in Peabody's history: the opening of the Boston Tea Party in December 1765; the Battle of Bunker Hill on July 8, 1775; and General John Adams' victory over King George III at Saratoga Springs on October 13, 1777. However, despite these milestones, Peabody experienced some difficult times during its time as a community. For example, between 1810-1820 there were more than twenty outbreaks of yellow fever which caused significant losses for both residents and businesses. During World War II, many jobs that would have been available to local residents were filled by soldiers stationed nearby at Camp Lejeune or nearby Naval Air Station Groton Heights. As a result of this military presence throughout much of Massachusetts during wartime (and also because many Concord families helped out), many homes acquired new features such as air conditioning and plumbing not available before then or even possible today with present technology such as water heating systems.
