The first USS Peabody (AO-1) was launched at the yard on December 12, 1942. The USS Peabody (AO-1) served as an escort vessel during World War II and is currently docked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Virginia.
Peabody is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,813 at the 2010 census. It lies near the Connecticut border. The town of Peabody was platted in 1795 by General Edward Peabody and his wife Judith Beecher. The first settler in Peabody was Major John Trimble who arrived in 1798. The name "Peabody" is thought to be derived from "peacoat" or "shawl-maker". At first, only people of English descent lived there; but as other Europeans moved into the area, they brought their own culture and language with them. In 1814, the town became part of Worcester County when it was created from parts of Middlesex and Worcester counties. In 1868, Amasa Morse located a sawmill on what is now Main Street which began production that year. In 1884, David Winthrop purchased land east of Main Street from Anson Morse for $1 million dollars which he used to build his namesake winery - Winthrop & Sons Vineyard vineyards were established soon thereafter). On July 8th 1912 two brothers named Harry and Sam Waldron bought 10 acres (4 hectares) northeast of downtown Peabody for $1 per acre (0.40 hectare). They started farming new land that same year and built a small house on it as their home until 1932 when they sold the property to Harry Waldron's grandson Milton Waldron who continued to farm it until 1984 when it passed onto his son Harry Jr.'s ownership and currently operates as a winery called Waldron Cellars.. In early 2019 a large fire burned down much of downtown Peabody leaving many buildings charred and destroyed including one historically significant building - this happened shortly before Canton Day weekend during which many events took place including harvest festivals etc...most notably an open air concert by Boston based rock band ZZ Top at Fenway Park attended by over 20000 people
