Peabody is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,693 at the 2010 census. Peabody is part of the Worcester–Fenway metropolitan area. The first European to visit Peabody was Captain John Smith on July 14, 1607. He named it "New Abington" after his ancestor, New England's first governor and future First Lord of the Admiralty Sir Edmund Andros (1585-1641). Captain John Smith's crew set up a trading post at what is now the intersection of State Street and Main Street in 1611. In 1614, Colonel Thomas White built a house on what is now Elm Street for himself and his wife Hannah White. They named their home "White House". In 1736 Reverend Nathan Chandler founded a Congregational church there called Christ Church which still stands today (though closed to worship since 1853). A major fire destroyed much of town in 1823 but rebuilt with new architecture including an octagon-shaped bell tower that still dominates Centre Square today. In 1830 Peabody had 2 churches; one Congregational and one Baptist which were both torn down by fire in 1840 because no insurance could be obtained for such disasters during that time period. In 1854 citizens voted to incorporate as a town under the name "Peabody". The incorporation took place on March 15th of that year with President James Kapp as its first mayor. The original town hall located on present day Lowe Boulevard served as the central business district until 1978 when construction began on what is currently known as the Peabody Museum which occupies most of downtown Peabody today. On November 6th 1978 voters passed an ordinance granting permission to build a high school within the boundaries of town limits which opened its doors to students in September 1982 and has continued operation ever since making it one of MA's only small towns with full-time enrollment in school!

Peabody, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. Peabody was founded in 1795 by General Nathaniel Peabody and his wife Deborah. The name of the town derives from an English word meaning "a place where lies corn." The first English settler in what is now Peabody was John Eliot who arrived in 1639. He named his land Pembroke after King George II of England's son. Over time other settlers followed suit with various names such as Plymouth, Marshfield and Quincy. In 1837, the town voted to change its name to Peabody after General Nathaniel Peabody Jr., one of America's most distinguished generals during the American Revolution and a member of Congress from Worcester County from 1798-1801 and 1809-1813. In 1916, president Woodrow Wilson dedicated a new building at Harvard University called Palmer House which housed both government offices and classrooms for undergraduate students studying law under Professor Edward Hale Palmer. This event marked Harvard's first affiliation with a university outside of Boston since 1636 when New Haven College accepted an offer from Bishop William Perkins to become Yale University's second school of law. Harvard currently houses several general use rooms within its connected buildings including President’s House (formerly Palmer House) on K Street NW; Eliot Building (built 1905), Chemistry Tower (1927), Graduate School Building (1965), Faculty Senate Chamber (1963), Wrigley Hall Annex/Wangraphy Laboratory annex (1978). These buildings were all built or renovated during the Wilson years when Harvard became more centralized as it grew into one large campus across three campuses: North Campus between Cambridgeport Road and Wellesley Street; South Campus between Kendall Square Mall and Allston Way; East Campus between Ruggles Road and Nathan Cummings Drive. On September 30th 1935 local residents made history when they organized themselves into committees to address social issues around their community including Prohibition being repealed that year by Governor Charles Evans Hughesbrough following ratification of Ulysses S Grant's Executive Order 921st which read "All intoxicating liquors are hereby Prohibited except beer which may be bought upon request without selling any intoxicating liquor". On October 5th 1935 local residents went ahead with this plan by passing a resolution approving prohibition enforcement through Town Meeting form then taking it to the Board Of Aldermen who passed it back to the Committee on Social Affairs where it proceeded to be put forth as an ordinance for signature by Mayor Joseph Biddle on November 2nd 1935 effective December 1st 335
