The gun was used as a target shooter and is now on display at the Peabody Museum of American Art. In 1865, General Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and six handguns were bought by his widow to be kept safe. One handgun is still on display at the National Firearms Museum in Dulles, Virginia. In 1892, Mrs. Gifford Pinchot became the first woman to own an automatic rifle when she purchased one from Wirt Hinton of Springfield Armory in Illinois. Peabody is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 30,569. The name derives from Peabody Island in Martha's Vineyard. The first European settlers in what is now Peabody arrived in 1636 by boat from Salem and named it after John Peabody, an old friend of theirs from England. In 1795, a company of men led by Captain Samuel Winthrop sailed for America and landed at Cape Cod on July 14th. They called their new settlement "Plymouth" after their ship. Plymouth was renamed Peabody in 1837 when Captian Isaiah White donated land to the community for education purposes and animal husbandry. In 1857, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his cavalry unit (the 1st Louisiana Cavalry) from Monroe to nearby Lexington because he wanted them to fight against Union forces under General Stephen Averill during the American Civil War. The 1st Louisiana Cavalry camped near present-day downtown Peabody during its stay and many officers were interned there while they awaited orders. After the war ended in 1865, most of the Confederate troops who had been living around Lexington turned over their arms or left for other Confederate states including Mississippi where they formed a guerrilla group known as the Ku Klux Klan which continued operations into the 21st century. However, some soldiers who had fought with Forrest remained in town until well into 1903 when they finally surrendered at Brushy Hill Farm east of town - this event is typically cited as marking end of hostilities between Unionists and Confederates in that part of Massachusetts . In 1892 saw construction begin on what would become Mount Holyoke College; this resulted from an offer by President Charles Wofford to donate land south of Boston if enough people pledged $10 per acre (. 40 acres at that time). The college opened its doors on November 25th, 1893 with 20 students and 4 faculty members! Today Mount Holyoke has over 400 students spread across 13 campuses throughout Massachusetts and Vermont . The natives were warlike and fierce, and the Europeans had little experience with life on an open-air island. In 1625, General John Winthrop led a group of Puritans back to England because he felt that religious toleration was necessary for his colony’s success. When he returned two years later, he found that most of his original followers had died or been forced out of Massachusetts due to Indian attacks. With few people left in Massachusetts to help him administrate his new territory, Winthrop turned to Peabody for help administrating his new colony. Peabody was one of several towns in New England founded by colonists during this time period as part of efforts to create self-sufficient communities without reliance on Spain or other European countries
Peabody was founded in 1837 by Simon Peabody and his wife Abby. The town was named after the daughter of John Quincy Adams, who served as governor of Massachusetts from 1801 to 1803. The first settler in Peabody was Abraham Lincoln, who arrived in 1840. In 1865, when Boston Dynamics opened its research center in nearby Arlington, Massachusetts, Peabody became the headquarters for that company. In 1916, a fire destroyed much of the town's infrastructure; since then, Peabody has invested heavily in rebuilding and development.
