The Peabody Army National Guard has a rich and varied history that dates back to the Revolutionary War. The unit was first organized on November 15, 1775, in response to the battalion-sized attacks by British forces on Patriot homes. The Peabody units fought in many battles during the war, including Saratoga and Yorktown. After the war, many Peabody men were drafted into the army and served in various capacities throughout the years. In 1815, however, when Massachusetts became a state within the United States of America, all military activities within Massachusetts were ended. In 1816, two years after Massachusetts joined Confederation as a new country (the US Constitution did not take effect until September 12th of that year), the Peabody Regiment was reorganized as an infantry regiment and redesignated as 2nd Battalion “Peabody” Infantry Regiment (2/1st Infantry). This change is significant because it signaled an end to hostilities between Bostonians and federalists – something that would continue through much of the 19th century. In 1821, while still an infantry regiment under 2/1st Infantry designation (it now forms part of 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Cavalry Division), 2/1st Infantry participated in Major General Nathaniel Greene’s drive against Robert E Lee’s Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House. After almost four hours of hard fighting (during which time over 100 soldiers died), Greene emerged victorious and this event is considered one of Boston’s most dramatic moments. subsequently colonel Samuel Eliot Morison documented this battle for posterity with his book “Appomattox: A Civil War History from Harper’s Ferry to Petersburg” 2/1st Infantry garrisoned Fort Mifflin near Philadelphia during President James K Polk’s Administration (1845-1849) 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Cavalry Division activated at Fort Hood TX on December 5th 2009 commanded by Colonel John Wyer On October 6th 2014 Colonel John Wyer was promoted to Brigadier General effective date 01 January 2015 OnNovember 8th 2016 Colonel John Wyer relinquished command 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Cavalry Division due to health reasons
