The Northampton Air National Guard Base is home to the 8th Air Force, Unit 3-502 "The Thunderbolts." Unit 3-502 was activated on January 16, 1951 at Northampton Municipal Airport. The unit originally consisted of three F-51D's and two T-6C's. On May 20, 1955, the squadron became an operational wing with a group of P-38 Lightning aircraft. In 1958, the wing converted to F-4E's and in 1969 became an all jet squadron when it received its first McDonnell Douglas CF-184 Starfighter jet aircraft. During the Vietnam War, Unit 3-502 flew missions over South Vietnam from Northampton Municipal Airport. In 1985, the unit transitioned to jets when it received its last McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft. Since then, The Thunderbolts has flown numerous missions including support of Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Neptune Spear deployments throughout North America.

Over $60 billion was spent by our forces through 16 separate commands and agencies - an increase of 3 percent over 2015. Defense spending is expected to grow 3 percent each year through 2027 due to treaties such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and President Donald J Trump's proposal for a further increase in nuclear weapons spending by 30 percent over current levels. The USAF 1st Fighter Wing provides combat airpower that can protect our nation from threats both at home and abroad. With its state-of-the art jets, this wing offers unmatched lethality against enemy fighters or bombers when performing missionside airborne interception/strike duties; electronic warfare; joint strike fighter training; global airspace surveillance; ISR (Intelligence Surveillance & Reconnaissance); munitions delivery; humanitarian assistance operations;Luke AFB Airshow Competition – Top Dog Contest presented by American Aviation Museum – "First Place"; MQM (Multinational Quick Reaction Alert) program captained by Colonel Michael Lappin III – first ever woman colonel commanding an USAF unit during peacetime hostilities! As part of Project Eagle II - which contains investments totaling $4 billion - this wing will receive a new set of Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighters reaching initial operational capability this summer 2020! The Northampton Air Force Base has been a major military installation in the town for over 60 years. The base was originally established as an airfield and training ground for the USAAF during World War II. It played a critical role in the war, providing air support for Allied campaigns such as Normandy and Italy. After the war, Northampton became home to the United States Air Force's Ninth Air Force which was responsible for conducting worldwide bombing missions. In 1967, Northampton AFB was renamed Wright-Patterson AFB after General Curtis LeMay, Jr., who led America's first strategic bombing campaign against Japan. In addition to its roles as a military installation and research center, Northampton AFB also hosts a number of civilian functions including an airport and several shopping malls.
Northampton, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. Northampton is one of the oldest towns in New England and the second largest town in Hampshire County after Salisbury. It was founded by English colonists who arrived in 1630. Northampton became an incorporated town on April 12, 1854. The first settler in what is now Northampton was Abraham Sparkes. He built his house on the site of what is now Main Street and Littleton Road. He named his farm "Newmarket", which means new market place in English. By 1746 there were over 100 British settlers living in Northampton Township; most had come from Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania near Philadelphia. In 1749 John Adams sold land to Daniel Fryer for £200 and started farming there until his death about 1763 or 1764; he and his wife had five children: Samuel (1748-1820), Abigail (1751-1824), Mercy (1753-1837), John (1755-1831) and Nathan (1757-1836). In 1795 Nathaniel Hayward patented a grant of coal mining rights to Joseph Atherton for £5 per tonne! This development led to much economic growth as men from other parts of New England began coming to this area to prospect for coal seams that lay beneath the range of hills immediately east of Boston proper but also under Worcester and Eastham counties bordering on Northampton Township. In 1800 two brothers by the name of Brown purchased 400 acres north of present day Route 139/Route 128 opposite Charlestown where they built a cabin called "The Gables". They raised a family here including nine children: Susannah Brown(died 1811), Moses Brown(baptized Jun 14th 1800 ; died 1830), Alfred Brown(1800 - 1871 ), Harriet Beecher Stowe(1812 - 1860), Elizabeth Hardwick Alger(died 1886) , Henry Seward Alger Jr.( bp Mar 10th 1816 d Jan 6th 1865 ), Franklin Denny Alger Jr.( bp Dec 9th 1840 d Sep 20th 1944) . On July 1st 1850 Amos Emerson bought 3⁄4 mile northeast corner lot #2123 belonging to AlfredBrown fromHarriet Beecher Stowe for $5 per acre with buildings & lots not included valued at $40 total

Here is a timeline of some of the most famous USAF gift histories: 1948 - The USAF created its first air force school, known as AFHQ. This was in response to the Korean War where United States forces were fighting alongside North Korea. 1960 - The USAF created its first Tactical Air Command (TAC). TAC was responsible for all fighter, bomber and missile aircraft within the USAF. 1968 - The USAF created its first Combined Arms Center (CAC), which was responsible for all joint military operations within the USAF. CAC also developed and operated nuclear weapons technology. Sgt Michael Epps became the 1st African American Top Gun at RAF Mildenhall in July 1968 after successfully completing an Officer Advanced Course at AFHQ at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. 1977 - The USAF donated $3 million to South Africa in memory of Lt Col James Lancaster who perished while serving with Squadron Luffenham during Operation Mjollnir when NATO bombed three strategic targets in Norway near Helgoland Islands on December 8th 1977. 1980 - In honor of World War II veteran Johnnie Cochran, the USAAF gifted him a helicopter simulator/assault training range known as “Johnnie Cochran Range” located at Bagram Airfield Afghanistan from 1984-1987 . 1987 - In honor of Admiral Chester Nimitz Jr., who had served as Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet during WWII and later served as Chairman Naval Operations Committee, Headquarters Department Pacific Fleet, the US Navy gifted him an USS Enterprise battle cruiser along with two other warships named USS California (BB-39) and USS Arizona (BB-40).
