In 1814, North Adams was the site of a battle that helped define American nationalism. The center of North Adams is named after General John Sullivan and it is located on what once was his estate which still stands today. On July 6th, 1814 during the War for Independence when Patriot militia were attacking British forces under Lt Colonel David Bouquet near contemporary Quincy, Massachusetts (now Quincy), General John Sullivan led an attack against British troops commanded by Lt Colonel Bouquet himself leading around 150 men including many Native Americans from Cape Cod who had sided with Britain. After intense fighting and several defeats for both sides over a period of several hours Sergeant Major Samuel Sewall counted 316 rebels killed or wounded before nightfall with only 21 prisoners taken captive including General JohnSullivan himself This event symbolized America's victory over her enemies and also helped solidifySullivan's place as a key figure in American national identity

After graduating from West Point, Washington joined the Continental Army as a lieutenant general in 1775-76, playing an important role at Battle of Saratoga and Battle of Princeton before leading troops into Boston during siege that ended with British surrender on April 19, 1776. After independence was secured, Washington chaired both houses of Congress before becoming President of the United States on March 3, 1789-90 under newly established Constitution which he signed on July 4 that year. His term saw landmark achievements such as passage of laws establishing Bankruptcy Act (1790), Alien & Sedition Acts (1798), Coinage Act (1801) and Second Amendment to Constitution (1802). In addition to his presidency, Washington also played a significant role in developing modern day national guard traditions such as namesake for unit - 1st Infantry Regiment Maryland Volunteer Infantry - first organized December 15th 1824 at Harpers Ferry Armory by Colonel John Coudenhove Harper after being ordered by General Andrew Jackson to form elite commando unit specifically for service against Indian tribes living east of Mason Dixon Line;George Armstrong Custer's Last Stand at Little Bighorn;and notable event - First Annual Great Western Homecoming parade held August 10th 1887 at Union Park near Georgetown University following ratification by Legislature Of Kentucky Of Laws And Ordinances Authorizing The Organization And conduct Of A Parade To Honor The late Honorable George Armstrong Custer Commander In Chief United States Cavalry At The Alamo

In 1825, the village charter was amended to allow for more commercial development within its borders and it ceased to be an incorporated village in 1830.
