North Adams, Massachusetts is a town in Massachusetts. North Adams is part of the Worcester metropolitan area and was incorporated as a city in 1868. The population was 85,391 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General John Pitcairn, who led British troops during the Revolutionary War. The town began as a small village on the banks of the Charles River near modern-day North Adams. In 1814, several farmers in what is now North Adams invited Captain Isaac Goodspeed of Gloucester to visit them and give them some advice about settling an area that would become their new home. Goodspeed's recommendation turned out to be correct, and by 1830, North Adams had reached its current size. During President James Ketchum's administration (1889-90), many improvements were made to the downtown district which included construction of the first train stop in Massachusetts outside Boston proper - called "Ketchumville". This stop was located on Park Street between High Street and Prescott Streets near Presentation Square today. Many businesses opened up around this time including two newspapers - The Republican (founded 1836) and The New Hampshire Herald (founded 1845). There were also three sawmills within easy walking distance of each other - one on Center Street nearpresentation square today, one just past presentation square northeast corner onto State Street next to Amherst College today, and another on West Main Street opposite presentation square northwest corner today where woolen cloths are still made today! One important event that occurred during this time frame was when 800 acres (30 hectares) along the riverbank became available for purchase from Captain Goodspeed for $1 per acre due to lack of interest from settlers at that time! This land would eventually become known as Arlington Heights which later served as both a neighborhood center for North Adams residents until it closed its doors in 1969 following City Council decision not to provide annexation rights! The early days of automobiles didn't begin until 1915 when a man by the name of Harry Busby imported his first gasoline powered car into town from New York City! By 1925 there were over 20 merchants located inside present day Market Square with 3 post office locations nearby including one right outside present day Town Hall building!! Prior to 1919 there wasn't even an address or phone number for most people within these businesses!!! With such growth came social changes too with more women coming into business than ever before while men continued working long hours outside their homes!! Eventually though all these changes did lead to some problems like absenteeism rates going up because many people simply left town because they couldn't handle all these new responsibilities!!!! Despite all these challenges though NorthAdams textile industry has been continuing stronger than any other since it started over 100 years ago!!!!! Today we have over 500 employees employed fulltime at our fabric factory making everything from fabrics for everyday wear such as dresses, blouses and skirts etc., truckloads ofSeasonal Clothing products such as Christmas trees & presents etc., carpets & rugs etc., plusmany specialties such as quilts

North Adams, Massachusetts was founded by the Puritans in 1692. The town is located in the southeastern corner of Massachusetts and is bordered by the towns of Northampton to the east, Springfield to the north, and Worcester to the west. The population of North Adams was 9,362 at the 2000 census. The town has a rich history that can be found from its founding until today. The first permanent settlers in North Adams were men who had fled religious persecution in England. These Englishmen named their new settlement after one of their most important families, the Adamses. The land that now makes up NorthAdams was first broken up into small parcels and offered for sale in 1692. One man who sold his parcel of land was John Smith Jr., who would later become an American Revolutionary War general. In 1693, Congress passed a bill setting forth guidelines for how towns should be organized within Massachusetts’s borders. This law made it almost impossible for any individual community to succeed without government help. This caused many people in North Adams to leave their homes and start anew on what would soon be a large tract of land northwest of Boston called “the Commonwealth” (today’s Quincy). In 1765, whenMassachusetts became a British colony, much of what is now NorthAdams was included within Southwark Township (now Watertown). However, during Confederation (the time between Great Britain and United States), Southwark Township voted to secede from Massachusetts and join New York State instead. During World War II, NorthAdams played an important role as a munitions plant due to its location near Boston Harbor (then known as Charlestown). In 1945, following World War II’s end, NorthAdams reverted back to its original name – “North Adams” – after being redesignated as part of I-95 corridor connecting Boston with New York City. A number of industries have been headquartered in or around NorthAdams over the years including banking; engineering; retail trade; health care; manufacturing; agriculture; and trade shows/events
