The Coast Guard's history in North Adams, Massachusetts goes back to 1859. The first Coast Guard station was built on the present site of the North Adams Municipal Airport in 1859. The station served as a stop for ships coming into and out of North Adams Harbor. In 1916, the Coast Guard began providing emergency services within the town of North Adams. In 1935, the Coast Guard authorized the construction of a new coastal guard station in NorthAdams which became operational on December 1, 1936. The new station was used to patrol and protect the coastlines of Massachusetts and Vermont. On November 15, 1941, during World War II, two vessels were hijacked by Japanese pirates off Long Island while en route from Halifax to Japan. A search party composed of members of both the United States Coast Guard and Japanese forces located two lifeboats with their crews taken captive along with all their supplies and equipment; this event is generally considered to be one of America's most successful maritime interventions during World War II. In 1951, Congress passed legislation authorizing establishment of an Advanced Life Support Unit at Cape Cod Naval Station in order to provide lifesaving assistance during earthquakes or other emergencies on that shoreline. This unit became fully operative on October 1, 1957 when it received its first personnel from Rhode Island Naval Base at Portsmouth Cove.. On May 2nd 1966 three officers from Boston Police Department responded to a report that someone had thrown lit fireworks onto Beacon Street in West Roxbury; this led to what is now called "the Great Fire" which destroyed many businesses in West Roxbury including several banks and a clothing store owned by Bill Cosby

The Coast Guard Auxiliary in North Adams, Massachusetts first organized on November 4, 1916. The Auxiliary was originally called the “Adams Volunteer Fire Department” and began providing services exclusively to the town of Adams. On October 1, 1918, the Auxiliary changed its name to the Coast Guard Auxiliary of North Adams. In 1941, the Auxiliary relocated from its original location in a building on Main Street to what is now known as Station Square. On December 11th, 1942, the Coast Guard Auxiliary merged with the United States Merchant Marine Service (USMSS) to become one organization. On February 26th, 1945, the Coast Guard Auxiliary became an independent agency within USMSS and continued to serve as an unincorporated organization separate from USMSS until it was disbanded on May 15th, 1995. Since its inception in 1916 through 1995 – when it united with USMSS - the Coast Guard Auxiliary has provided support for more than 12 million military and civilian personnel who work together protecting America's coasts and waterways.

North Adams is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,516 at the 2010 census. North Adams is part of the Boston metropolitan area. North Adams was first settled by English colonists in 1636 and became a part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1642. The towns of North Adams and South Adams were created from parts of what was then Norwich Township on December 14, 1793. The town's charterholder was John Brown in 1795-97 and 1800-01. It lost its charter status on February 5, 1802 but regained it on January 1, 1803 due to a petition signed by 400 residents. On March 8, 1835, North Adams merged with neighboring village South Amherst to form the new town of North Amherst. On November 24, 1850 the town acquired property east of Route 3 (now Route 128) which formed what is now Watertown Crossing; this acquisition made it possible for the city of Boston to annex much of Norfolk County including portions of Watertown Crossing afterMassachusetts went into receivership on October 15th under order from Ulysses S Grant during his presidency over Reconstruction efforts following American Civil War
