North Adams is part of the Boston–Cambridge-Newton metropolitan area. It is home to Dartmouth College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Town of North Adams was first settled in 1636 by John Smith and his band of Puritans after they left England for America. The town was named for Colonel Nicholas North, an Englishman who had come to help settle the new land in what is now Massachusetts. NorthAdams remained a small community until it became one of the most prosperous towns in Massachusetts during the early 19th century because its residents were engaged in manufacturing and commerce. In 1820, when Hampden County was created from parts of Middlesex County, North Adams became one of its seven townships. In 1830, it became one of six townships within Hampden County proper; this change came about because there were only four municipalities within that county at that time (Brockport, Ipswich, Quincy, and Westhampton). A fire destroyed much of the town's commercial center on December 8, 1868; however municipal officials quickly rebuilt using local materials and funds available at that time. The rebuilding process took many months and cost $5 million dollars ($ as of 2019). Thanks to government sponsorship (the Federal Land Bank contributed over $2 million), construction started on October 22nd 1870 and finished on November 12th 1870 - almost two years ahead schedule! On July 5th 1880 voters passed a referendum authorizing incorporation into a city! Incorporation took place on August 14th 1880 with a population total exceeding 3200! During Reconstruction South African Americans began moving into Boston beginning in 1877 which caused some tension between white control over businesses while black people continued living inside their own communities which developed into race riots throughout Boston during this time period called “The Great Chicago Race Riot” or "The White Riot" . These events led to increased tensions between different races across America leading up to World War II . Although there were no major riots taking place during World War II in North Adams thanks largely to good cooperation between both races it did experience some sporadic community tension related to working class issues such as discrimination against women or African Americans owning homes

North Adams, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,856 at the 2010 census. North Adams is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what would become North Adams were white men who had come overland from New England during the early 17th century. They were led by John Winthrop and his group of Pilgrims in 1630. The town was founded on November 3, 1812 by order of General George Washington as a military post on neck of land between Ipswich and Quincy to provide security for the canal construction project underway nearby. In 1825, the town voted to become an incorporated municipality with a vote of 5-to-1 against incorporation by its residents because they felt it would be too much work to manage such a large community as an individual entity. On July 12, 1850, North Adams annexed neighboring towns of Brockton and Nahant without any voting being taken; this made NorthAdams one of the only municipalities in Massachusetts that did not have representation in its own government until 1959 when it became part of Boston through annexation again. On April 10, 1910, local resident Charles Fenton set out hand grenades across the border into Canada after becoming convinced that America's entry into World War I was imminent and wanted to help defend his home country from potential destruction; he failed to return home alive but left behind evidence that could still be used today to prove American complicity in war crimes committed during World War I. This event helped fuel antiwar sentiment throughout America during World War I and continues to play a role in US politics today.
