Newburyport is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth largest town in Plymouth County and the second most populous town in New England after Boston. Newburyport is founded by Puritans in 1630 as a small community on the south bank of the Merrimac River near where it crosses into Plymouth County. The first house built there was called "The Parsonage." The name derived from its position on a ferry landing and because of this, Newburyport developed a reputation for being an important commercial center for shipping goods across the river. Newburyport experienced significant growth during the American Revolution and became one of the most important Tory-held towns in Massachusetts. In 1775, General John Burgoyne's army invaded Massachusetts and besieged Boston; however, with help from British forces under General Thomas Gage, Newburyport successfully repelled Burgoyne's invasion and helped to save Boston from capture. After independence was achieved, many of Newburton’s Loyalists emigrated to Canada or other parts of North America where they continued to play an important role in settler life. During World War II many manufacturers moved their operations out of Massachusetts to avoid bombing raids by Nazi Germany which destroyed large parts of that state but not all; some businesses such as IBM retained their facilities in Manchester until late 1944 when they relocated to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (now Worcester State University). Many local residents also served in various Allied military campaigns including those fought during Europe’s Liberation Wars: Normandy (1944), Italy ( 1945), Japan (1946-1948), Korea (1950-1953) and Vietnam (1975-1978). Today much attention has been given to redeveloping downtown neighborhoods adjacent to campuses located along Route 1 between Plainville Road/Route 128/North Street/Fenway Park Boulevard/American Legion Building due largely to incomingdevelopment pressures brought about by suburban expansion into central Massachusettes over the past few decades; commuting distance has become increasingly irrelevant whenfactors like proximity to major medical centers or universities are taken into account. Withdrawn factories have been replaced by new housing developments that often feature highrise buildings overlooking highways or downtown areas reminiscent of older industrial neighborhoods found throughout eastern Pennsylvania and western Ohio before Interstate 95 expanded those regions eastward toward Buffalo Grove IL In recent years there has been interest expressed both within town limits as well as beyond its borders for what has come to be known locally as "the port" – namely aspects surrounding container storage yards located just inland from Main Street off Lake Winnipesaukee Avenue adjacent both waterfront parklands facing Lakes Winnipesaukee & Dunster Rivers as well as land immediately northwest along lake shoreline extending inland towards Allston MA retail districts currently under development with plans eventually including office space occupying nearly half of total project area once completed majority residential portions currently occupied with several thousand additional vehicles& people parked daily on cityowned lots & hundreds more trucks stored overnight at various sites across town
