New Bedford is a town in Massachusetts, located on the Mystic River. The population was 25,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-Worcester-Fenway, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Bedford has been a trading post and fishing village since 1636, when it was founded by Captain John Smith. The first English settlement in what is now Massachusetts was at Ipswich, about three miles (5 km) to the south-west of New Bedford. In 1635, Smith and his men discovered a rich oil well at Narragansett Bay and began an exploration of offshore resources. In 1636, they founded New Bedford as a trading post on an artificial island in Narragansett Bay. The merchants who developed the town became wealthy from their trade with the Dutch and French colonies along the North Atlantic coast. They built many fine homes in New Bedford during its early years; one such home still stands today within walking distance of downtown New Bedford. The town acquired its present name from Captain John Smith's landing there on October 15, 1636 – "New Bergh". At that time it extended only as far east as Brunswick Street (now Meeting House Road), which crossed over todays George Washington Bridge; beyond that point it lay open to Indian attack or seizure by others who might choose to settle thereabouts. After France's victory over England in Quebec in 1759 led to increased French activity along the Connecticut River Valley and especially around Saybrook Village near Stamford (now Hartford), General William Howe decided upon an aggressive strategy against these new French forces based upon his conviction that British interests would be better served if he could isolate them rather than face potential military opposition from multiple sources simultaneously . Accordingly, on December 14th., 1759 – two days after Quebec's fall – General Howe ordered Admiral Samuel Graves to sail upriver from Portsmouth Harbor with five frigates under Commodore Edward Vernon pg 1 ff1–2 Captain Graves foundered before reaching his destination due diligence problems but he did discover several sizable tracts of land lying northeastward between Brunswick Street and Kingstown Point which formed part of Bartholomew Plantation which had belonged to Brantley Peake since 1646 according to records extant at Kingsborough Manor www2 , cf 3 Brantley Peake had joined Bacon’s Rebellion against Charles II some time earlier but had subsequently come into compliance with English rule through marriage alliances with other prominent Tories including Increase Mather and Squire Nicholas Westfall etcpg 1 ff1–2 Bartholomew Island lay within this area whereupon Graves referred for assistance another day later to Captains John [Dennis] Furse & Thomas Parker pg 2 fn3 These gentlemen sailed upriver accompanied by Lt Col David Thompson all under License No C4/16 dated February 3rd 1600 alledgedly granted for service rendered at Plimoth Plantation whither Captaine Furse also having migrated thenceforward viz 5 Vessels laden wit goods cased full thereof & 4 foote Guns shipped Februarie last 1600 while yet under Commission no less then 8 Vessels were sent out compleately without license so vast a summe wee know not how ye may acquit you selfe bearing such heavy Covenants pg3
