New Bedford is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,549 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Plymouth County. The Town of New Bedford was founded in 1764 by colonists from England and named for the then-newport of London. The first permanent settler was John Smith, who arrived in 1768 and built a small cabin on what is now Beacon Hill. By 1800, there were more than 100 residents living in New Bedford. The town's annexation into Plymouth County occurred that year. In 1836, an act of the Massachusetts General Court designated New Bedford one of twelve townships within Plymouth County to be formed as a result of the state's revised system of township organization. This change resulted in an increased level of development around the town center with large farms following close behind; some still use this system today. Many businesses and residences dating back to before 1840 are preserved or still used today including Baptist pastor Elijah Woodhouse's house on Beacon Hill which he purchased for $10 from another British colony resident during the Revolution (it became known as "The Woodhouses" after him).
