The New Bedford Coast Guard has been providing service to the community since 1797. The Coast Guard was founded in 1797 as the British Customs and Excise Service. In 1836, the United States acquired Canada’s portion of the Great Lakes region and formed the United States Army Corps of Engineers to help manage these newly acquired lands. In 1847, President James K. Polk established a new Coast Guard Departmental Headquarters in New Bedford with jurisdiction over all maritime aspects of the Nation’s coast guard services. In 1932, Congress authorized both military and civilian lifeguards to be assigned to duty on our Nation’s coasts as part of an effort to improve public safety at our ports and waterways. These first lifeguard patrols were conducted out of larger cruisers that could accommodate only 30 personnel each. Today, we have 11 cruisers that can accommodate up to 350 personnel each which makes us one of America's most capable coast guard services! This generous funding also allowed for modernization of our enforcement capabilities including new boats, helicopters, radar technology and more! During World War II we responded quickly and effectively when called upon by Congress (and Roosevelt) for assistance on various coastal areas across the country- from Maine to California! We provided invaluable support through both combat operations and Civilian Conservation Administration projects such as reclamation work on Long Island Sound beachhead during World War II alone! Our response time knowledgable about local conditions precluded any potential loss or destruction caused by enemy action while patrolling our coastline! Today we continue this proud tradition with Operation Neptune's Spear- a joint U.S./Canadian mission launched in September 2010 aimed at extinguishing 14 illegal opium poppy growing sites along Nova Scotia's northeastern coast! It is important to remember that not every arrest or search results in convictions; often it is just necessary for law enforcement officials to determine whether there may be additional sites where drugs are being produced. Through this Operation Neptune's Spear project we hope To disrupt large trafficking networks which produce billions of dollars worth of narcotics annually- reducing demand throughout North America!"

New Bedford is a town in Massachusetts, located on the eastern coast of Cape Cod. The population was 27,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Plymouth County, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up New Bedford was first settled by English people in 1624 as part of a land grant to Prince Edward's brother John Vesey. The town was founded as Newbury in 1723 by General John Stark and his wife Dorothy Pitcairn, daughter of Sir William Pitcairn. In 1727, the new townsite of Fall River became a separate town after it was decided that there would be two villages within the new community: Fall River and New Bedford. In 1837, while still part of Plymouth County, New Bedford voted to become an incorporated municipality with its own government and Laws passed incorporating many other towns throughout Plymouth County into Municipal Corporations similar to what had been done for New Bedford. This act became known as "The Charter Amendment". On July 1st 1861 when all but 2 out of 24 towns in Plymouth County were annexed into Boston City through this process (the lone exception being Westborough), New Bedford also voted to annex itself into Boston City; it has since always remained within Boston City limits. On January 1st 1903 (one year before Boston made its official annexation), the entire town including Fall River merged with Worcester to form one large city under one mayor/council system which continued until 1974 when each municipality had their own mayor/council systems again with elected officials from both cities combined into one body known as "Boston Community Services District" or BCSD). The merger did not effect Fall River which remains an independent village-turned-city today - although some residents do refer to themselves simply as "New Bedfordians." There have been several expansions and rebrandings over time due to various issues such as population growth rates changing needs or desires among different parts of the community - most notably during the late 1990s when WGBH began airing educational programming about early America on weekdays starting at 9am called "New England Frontiers" which led to more people coming downtown for breakfast etc.; this increased traffic caused construction aroundMain Street including some high rise buildings going up near South Harbor beachfront; however much like any other growing city/town there are challenges and controversies associated with expansion especially given how infrastructure can only handle so much growth without becoming overwhelmed - henceforth dubbed 'The Rebalancing Act' where things like parking garages becoming too full quickly lead developers back onto South Harbor Blvd., making extra highways needed such as Route 128 necessary even though they're often used for parking instead! In recent years development along Main Street has slowed down somewhat due mostlyto demographics change where older couples are moving out rather than staying put due largelyto higher property values elsewhere in town while younger families are choosing less congested areas closer to jobs or entertainment options outside of downtown; nevertheless restaurants continue proliferating along Meeting House Square mall near Market Street & North Kingstown Road while numerous small businesses continue opening up throughout Downtown NEW BEDFORD BUSINESSES LISTING PAGE
