In the early 1800s, the New Bedford Militia was one of the most powerful militias in Massachusetts. The militia was formed in 1775 and served as a defense against Indian attacks. The militia continued to be operative until 1834 when it was disbanded. However, it is important to note that not all members of the militia were active during its time as a unit. Some members did not serve due to illness or other reasons. In fact, many of the men who served in the militiamen during its earliest days are still buried at Ft. William Henry (now part of Fort Shaw Park) in New Bedford today. The first military gift given by someone from New Bedford came about in 1792 when Major David Whitmore donated two cannons and four magazines for use by the militia. This gift is significant because it shows how much attention was given to defense within New Bedford at this time. It also demonstrates how much society considered military service important at this point in history. Thereafter, gifts were common among friends and family members of soldiers serving in war efforts throughout Massachusetts. Gifts such as muskets, pistols, swords, saddles and tents became popular items for soldier’s families during this time period because they symbolized support for their loved ones who were fighting on behalf of their countrymen. Additionally, these items often conveyed messages of congratulations or thanksgiving after a successful battle or victory over an opposing force. It is interesting to note that while gifts have been present throughout historyassociated with support for military endeavors, there have been some unique instances where individuals from outside of Massachusetts gave away large sums of money to help finance wars abroad or protect our soil from invaders (e.g., Revolutionary War era donations). These types of donations are indicative of how much people valued military service back then and what kind of impact it had on society both domestically and internationally
