The United States Air Force gift history begins in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1942. The town of New Bedford had a request for an air force surplus plane. Lt. Colonel William Silliphant, who was the commanding officer of the 413th Bomb Group at Holloman AFB, accepted the request and donated his C-46 Skytrain to the New Bedford Municipal Airport. The plane was then used by the local military as a training aircraft and later placed into storage at Holloman AFB until it was donated to the city of New Bedford in 1992. Since its donation, the plane has been displayed at various museums around town and is now part of the Municipal Airport Museum. It is also used for parades and other special events throughout the year and is open tothe public on certain days during summertime. In addition, it has been featured on several television shows such as "America's Most Wanted" and "Walking with Dinosaurs". This unique piece of American aviation history has made New Bedford an important community within the USAF culture and continues to be a source of pride for many residents today.

The New Bedford Air National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War I. The unit was activated as the 312th Aero Squadron in 1917 and fought in the war, earning distinction for its exploits in air combat. In 1924, the 312th flew its first Douglas A-2A Havoc bomber. In 1938, the New Bedford wing of the Massachusetts Wing of the United States Air Force (USAF) was activated and became part of fighter Command Third AF stationed at bases throughout North America. The wing was redesignated Fifth Tactical Air Force on 1 October 1945 when all Fourth Air Forces were combined under headquarters Eighth AF at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Tenth Tactical Air Force was activated 15 May 1946 and reassigned to Ninth AF located at Randolph AFB, Texas. On 25 October 1947 Tenth TAF became known as Continental USAF and moved from Randolph AFB to Seymour Johnson AFB, South Carolina where it operated untilactivated 8 March 1948 when all USAF tactical commands were reorganized into Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). The New Bedford ANG is one of only few units that still maintains its World War I era equipment including an A-2A Havoc Bomber as well as Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighters and Republic P-51 Mustang bombers.

After World War II, air forces continued to grow in power and reach new heights as technology improved. In recent years, airforces have become even more important as they continue to play an ever-larger role in society. Air forces are one of the oldest branches of the military and their history can be traced back to1897 when Royal Flying Corps was founded. This organization helped lead Britain into World War I but it was not until 1917 that RAF became operational under military control. The RAF grew rapidly during World War II and by 1945 it had reached its size – over 60,000 men – compared to USAAF’s 9,500 men and Japanese Imperial Air Force’s 1,200 men. During this time period RAF also made great strides in technology with developments such as radar which allowed for targets being located much earlier than ever before. After World War II ended there was a large debate over what should be done with the vast amounts of Aircraft that had been lost in war (estimates range from 50% up to 90%). Some felt that these Aircraft should be preserved while others advocated for their conversion into buses or other vehicles for transport purposes instead of being stored away like derelict Aircraft. It would take many years for all these different proposals to come about but eventually plans were put together for storage at RAF Brize Norton near Oxfordshire England where they remain today (to this day). Today, airforces are still one of the most important branches of our Armed Forces and their importance cannot be overemphasized given their ability to project power far and wide both domestically AND abroad. Their continuing growth is something we should all appreciate!
