Methuen, Massachusetts was founded on May 15, 1638 by John Methuen and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named after the Methuen family of London who had property in the area. The first settler in Methuen was Richard Putnam who arrived in 1640. In 1648, the town passed to Massachusetts Bay Colony under the terms of the Treaty ofNantes which ended King Philip's War. After Cambridge became a separate colony in 1649, Methuen continued to be part of MA until 1794 when it became part of New Hampshire. The history of Methuen begins with its early settlement by English colonists. John Methven had land near present day Methuen and purchased it from the Indians in 1638 for $200 worth of goods and services. He built a small log cabin there called “Methven” on what is now President Street. In addition to his home, Mr. Methven erected two other buildings: one for use as a schoolhouse and another for storage purposes; both structures were destroyed by fire about fifty years later but have been reconstructed several times since then. In March 1647, Increase Mather came overland from Ipswich and established himself at Plymouth Rock along with some other Puritans who had come overland from England during King Philip's War (1645-46). Mather soon became an important figure within Plymouth Colony and helped organize its forces against the Dutch colonists located along the coast of New Netherland (now New York). Mather also played an important role in founding Harvard University which he served as its first Chancellor (1583-1600). On October 24th, 1649, MA residents elected Thomas Gage as their new governor following Rhode Island's vote to secede from British Columbia colony - an event that led to calls for more severe punishment against Bostonians convicted of aiding or abetting Patriotism during King Philip's War .
