The name "Methuen" is derived from the Algonquian word "mảhtuna" meaning "place of many waters." Methuen was first settled by converts to Christianity from among the Narragansetts in 1630. It became a town in 1793 and remained so until 1925. The Methuen Congregational Church, founded in 1630 by Baptists seeking to spread their faith into what were then Indian Country, still stands as one of the oldest congregations of its kind in New England. A small part of Methuen was taken over by Puritan settlers in 1793 following King George's War; most of the remainder achieved township status on December 15, 1793. The early history of Methuen can be traced back to Roger Williams' missionary efforts there during the late 16th century (he called it Middletown). He had arrived with his group of Puritans on May 13, 1643 and preached an ethic message that aimed to unify all English colonies under one roof. Williams succeeded where other missionaries failed and helped spur various settlements throughout New England into existence as towns - including Worcester (1648), Ipswich (1654), Salem (1655), Manchester (1657), Providence (1659) and Worcester again (1723). Williams left behind him a lasting legacy when he established what would come to be known as 'theETHIOPIAN FOUNDATION'. This non-profit organization supported religious freedom for Native Americans through education and land purchases while also translating biblical texts into native languages for use here among his people. In addition, ETHIOPIAN FOUNDATION laid down key principles which have served as guides for both American Indians and white settlement throughout history: self-reliance, communalism or “commonweal” above individual interest, stewardship over natural resources - including hunting grounds - and integrity toward others within treaty boundaries
