Methuen, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Norfolk Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Methuen Historic District includes more than 100 buildings dating from 1735 to 1868. Methuen was first settled by English settlers in 1630 and named for Methuen in Worcestershire, England. The first school in Methuen opened on February 3, 1735. In 1764, the town became an independent parish under the jurisdiction of Worcester Parish. In 1801 Methuen incorporated as a village and voted to become a town under the new state constitution that year. In 1836 Methuen had its first store and post office building; it also built a jail and prison (now known as the Norfolk County Correctional Facility). The modern-day downtown area of Methuen began development during World War II when many families relocated from other parts of Norfolkshire because of war production quotas set by munitions manufacturers in Springfield. During wartime housing shortages many people used abandoned military barracks or converted churches into dwellings until they were destroyed by fire or taken over by squatters after the war ended. Today much of downtown is stilloccupied housing units dating back to the early 1960s which are now subject to preservation efforts led by local property owner John Sperry Jr.. Methuen, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester– Fall River–Southbridge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Methuen was platted in 1786 by George Methuen and named after his grandfather Methuen (1668-1737). The first settler to arrive in what is now Methuen was John Morse who arrived in 1789. He married Mary Morehouse and founded the town on land that he bought from the Wampanoag tribe for $1 per acre. By 1800 there were over 150 people living in Methuen. In 1803 Ethan Allen established an Academy here which still exists as Dartmouth College today. The First Congregational Church was built in 1812 and still stands today on Main Street near the old school house. In 1825 Methuen became a commonwealth town and began to receive government services such as schools, streetlights, sewerage and firewood delivery. On October 26 of that year it incorporated as a city with a population of 810 residents. In 1870 Methuen annexed much of nearby Fall River which had a population of 6,000 people at that time making it one of the largest incorporations ever performed in Plymouth County history. During World War II many citizens chose not to serve because they felt they could have done more good by helping their local economy Instead they took up hobbies or worked odd jobs during wartime found ways to help other businesses survive but all too often those businesses failed when economic conditions changed again without any assistance from hometown governments not willing or able to keep up
Methuen was founded by John Methuen in 1638. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the junction of several roads, and by 1815 Methuen had a population of over 1,200 people. In 1847 Methuen became the county seat of Middlesex County.
