Adams considered these villages "a kind of second Bruton" because they were situated so close to one another but differed primarily in their religious beliefs (Adams being Anglican while these other villagers were Congregational). Adams decided that Northampton should be incorporated intoBoston proper and Melrose should remain independent. After making this decision, Adams dedicated a small piece of land adjacent to Northampton's churchyard as an park known today as Quincy Market Square in honor of its new political affiliation. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many residents went into service with either the Union or Confederate armies; some even took up arms against their own government. The present name honours Samuel Parker (1789-1860), an early landowner and developer who also helped create Pittsfield as an agricultural center with large plantations around him. In 1860, when Pittsfield opened its doors as a city under Republican auspices following the American Civil War, many residents chose to move away from Melrose due to their concerns about Reconstruction policies pursued by President Abraham Lincoln during that time period. By 1870 however, the population of Melrose had reached 60 people again - but this time due to waves of immigrants arriving through Pittsfield's rapidly expanding dockyards and factories during that era: Italians and Germans among them. Notwithstanding these challenges – and despite someAnti-Catholic sentiment which persisted into the 20th century – by 1920 there remained over 100 residents in what would become known as "the little old town". On October 25, 1793, the first town meeting in Melrose was held. The Meeting resulted in the creation of a committee to study ways to improve the town and recommended that a Post Office be established. The Committee also recommended that a public square be constructed and that two churches be built. On December 3, 1793, the town voted to establish a Post Office and on December 10, 1793, both churches were built.
