The first coffee shop in Melrose, Massachusetts opened its doors in 1845. It was called the Coffee House and served coffee and pastries from a small desk on the front porch. The shopkeeper, Mrs. Melvin, made her own Frothing cream puffs and sold them for two cents each. In 1862, the shop was renamed the American Coffee House and continued to serve coffee until it closed in 1916. The building that now houses Maga Coffee also served as a schoolhouse from 1892-1963. Melrose, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Melrose is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in New England. The town has a variety of cultures represented by its various languages spoken by its residents: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Irish. The first Europeans to explore what would become Melrose were Giovanni da Verrazzano and Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1524 and 1525 respectively. In 1624 John Winthrop came ashore on Long Island Sound and named it after his home-town of Rehoboth Beach in Sussex County in England – now part of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Winthrop's nephew Samuel Eliot Morison later changed the name to "Melrose" for the same reason; because he felt that no other name could properly reflect the diversity of life found there (integrating both English and Native American cultures). In 1770 Captain Philips founded a trading post at Whatcom River Mouth on land which he had acquired from Weymouth people under Treaty 7 of 1763 following their defeat at Battle of Bunker Hill. The post became an important center for trade with Indians and other parts of New England during King George's War (1775-83) as well as during revolutionary times when British forces burned down many villages along the coastline including Ipswich and Marblehead due to lack of food storage facilities available inland. On November 3, 1814 Ulysses S Grant arrived at what today is called Point Breeze beach near present day Westborough to disembark troops bound for Fort Monroe after crossing overland from Kingston Landing on Cape Cod Bay - then considered an extremely difficult journey given only four days' provisions for any army larger than 10 men across open ocean without being lost or attacked by hostile natives or sea monsters such as whales! After three weeks marching through dense forest covered with ice caused by winter rainspsampling (now known as frozen ground syndrome), they reached Point Breeze about sunset on December 11th! This event helped spur Congress into passing acts providing military supplies necessary for war against Napoleon Bonaparte throughout much of 1815-1816 – finally leading to his successful Campaign against France culminating in his victory at Waterloo on July 14th 1815.. A public school was established in 1784 but closed two years later due to budgetary constraints associated with Presidency Of James K. Polk's administration led by Andrew Johnson who also closed all but one school district within America during his time as president starting circa 1865 onward!! The town was first settled in 1636 by Puritans from England and named for John Milton, who had died in that year. In 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was published, many of the townsfolk left to join General George Washington's army; Melrose remained behind. The community grew rapidly during the 18th century as people accumulated wealth from agriculture and trade with other villages in New England. In 1798, a new road was built through the town by Major James Bowdoin; it became known as Bowdoin Street. This addition to Melrose's history increased its importance and prosperity because it connected it with Boston and made it easier for goods to be transported between those two cities. During the 19th century, more manufacturing operations were set up in Melrose; this led to an increase in traffic on both roads leading into Boston. As a result of this growth, businesses started to close down and people lost their jobs. However, there were also some positive developments: in 1892 a church was built and school started teaching children;[1] and in 1916 Melrose opened its own hospital which became one of the largest in Boston after World War I.[2] However, economic recession hit Melrose hard during the late-2000s; among other things, residents lost their jobs as well as their homes due to increasing costs associated with professional development programs offered by neighboring towns such as Somerville or Lexington MA.[3] Despite these challenges, however, locals have worked hard to maintain morale and keep their community running smoothly despite budget cuts which have impacted nearly every aspect of life within recent years including health care services,[4] social events,[5][6][7][8][9][10] libraries[11], watermain replacements,[12][13],and several parks[14].
