Melrose is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Melrose were the Mayflower Compact party on July 16, 1620. They named it "New Amsterdam". After a few years of exploration and some skirmishes with natives, they returned home in October 1624 and reported that they found no nice place to live so they founded Dorchester (now Quincy) on December 12 of that year as their new home. On January 14, 1628 Englishman John Winthrop came ashore on the shore of present-day Melrose after his ship had been lost at sea for months. He landed with his men and 3 horses at what is now Southwick Pond which he named "Winthrop's Point". The point served as an early ferry landing for passengers going to Ipswich or Marblehead because there was no other convenient spot in those days. In 1630 Puritan minister Cotton Mather located land grant called "Plymouth" about south of present day Melrose on which he built a house and mill known today as Cotton Mather House. In 1634–35 Increase Ladd built a gristmill on Spring Brook near where the pond now stands and this became national fame when it produced flour for Boston during King Philip's War (1675-1676). In 1740 Captain John Rowe erected an inn called Rowe's Inn at what is now Northampton Street just across from West Roxbury Cemetery where he entertained British troops quartered nearby while Indian war preparations were under way. The soldiers got tired of living close to Indians so they burned down Rowe's Inn in 1742 after only three nights occupancy because there was no food available for them either inside or outside their inn! That event forever changed downtown Northampton into its present form! The townspeople did not want to give up their original name so in 1812 they voted by referendum to keep their original name but change it to Melrose – also spelled "Milton" – Townshend being one of the proponents thereof. On April 15, 1814 a fire destroyed most of Derby Hall Record Office which housed government records dating back over 100 years including state marriage licenses and court transcripts from before district courts began functioning under Commonwealth jurisdiction in 1795 Shortly thereafter both towns decided not to build any more schools until such time as an appropriate site could be found; however, due to increasing population growth rates, both towns eventually developed high school systems although village youth programs continue until this day). As late as 1990 nearly all residents who lived within one mile (two blocks) of either town center were required by law to attend one or more public schools open unto students 6th through 10th grades; however these days virtually everyone who lives within two miles (three blocks) has access to private school opportunities without having whatsoever connection with either town center education system whatsoever! Although personal income levels have remained relatively steady throughout much recent community growth rate fluctuations (and occasional decreases), educational opportunities have gradually become progressively more diverse thereby resulting ultimately in increased overall social activity levels despite ever-rising housing prices currently experienced within each respective town center districts .
