Melrose, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Melrose were two brothers named Nicholas and Miles Paston who landed on Cape Cod in 1636. They built a small trading post there and named it "Paston's Harbor" after their captain. When the area was bought by the Crown for £14,000 from Nicholas Paston in 1643 as part of the peace settlement following the Pequot War, he divided his land among his four children: John Paston (1723-70), Anthony Paston (1741-1802), Mary Paston Goodspeed (1746-1826) and Sarah Goodspeed (1750-1827). Anthony Paston subdivided still more land into townships; one of these became Melrose Township on April 14, 1796 when Samuel Adams platted what would become Melrose Village. On February 25th 1810 James Ketchum donated 640 acres (276 hectares) to Melrose Township which included present day downtown Melrose as well as portions of Arlington Heights and Westborough. This donation forms much of today's eastern border with Arlington Heights while western borders are defined by Watertown Avenue and Walnut Street which run through Northfield Square adjacent to Harvard University Extension School

Melrose was a town in Massachusetts, United States, located on the border of Melrose Park and North Arlington. It is now part of Arlington Heights. The first settlement in what is now Melrose County was on the south side of the tracks between Hartford and Wethersfield. In 1811, Samuel Morse founded a trading post here and named it Morse's Station after him. The station served as an important connection between Hartford and Wethersfield. In 1836, the eastern boundary of what is now Arlington Heights was set at South Ashland Avenue by virtue of a bill passed by the legislature. The town had been growing rapidly since its incorporation as a village in 1834, but there were no roads leading to it from outside the township or from within it. To resolve this problem, trustees established two roads: one connecting South Ashland Avenue with Winchester Road (now Kedzie Boulevard), and another connecting North Arlington with Old Centreville (now Elmhurst). The townspeople quickly erected buildings for their new settlements and began to process land for farming. By 1840, there were over 100 additional residents in Melrose County. Growth continued apace through the 1830s and 1840s; by 1850, there were 1,400 people living in Melrose County according to government records. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many workers from rural Massachusetts came to work on General Ulysses S Grant's army during his march through Illinois and Michigan Territory towards Washington D C.[1] Many soldiers stopped at various stations along their route including Morse's Station where they could buy refreshments before continuing southward. When they reached Springfield they changed into civilian clothes again before marching home - some men stayed overnight at Morse's Station while others cooked dinner for their families back at home.] After the war ended, many farmers returned to farming while others bought land around Melrose Village which developed into today’s north side of Arlington Heights[2]. By 1870 there were still only about fifty residents living in Old Centreville when President Ulysses S Grant granted permission for development around it on April 15th[3]. On December 25th 1870 Trustees voted unanimously that development should commence eastward along Broadway from current Walnut Street northerly to State Street southerly with consequences that would include erection of dwellings westward beyond Walnut Street until Masons Corner where cars could be stored without obstruction
